Overview

The Indian Institute of Hotel Management (IIHM) specializes in hospitality education that offers high-quality training and effective placement solutions. Based in India, the institute worked with AWS Partner Workmates to implement an AWS generative AI solution based on Amazon Bedrock. As a result, IIHM is seeing 50 percent faster interviews, 90 percent hiring accuracy, and a 20–30 percent higher rate of student job placements. In addition, surveys show that IIHM has created a more engaging learning environment, with 75 percent of educators and students now feeling more secure interacting with AI-generated content.

Opportunity

Seeking Better Processes for Interviewing and Content Creation

The Indian Institute of Hotel Management (IIHM) has established itself as a leading Indian institution in hospitality education, recognized for its commitment to excellence and global reach. IIHM has cultivated a robust network and honed its training methodologies to offer unparalleled educational experiences in the hospitality sector. More than 10,000 people are in the IHM alumni network. The organization emphasizes high-quality training and effective placement solutions, which have resulted in alumni working in top-tier organizations across the globe. This achievement reflects the gradual and deliberate approach IIHM has taken to growth and evolution in the field of hospitality education. IIHM's educational philosophy extends beyond technical proficiency to include the development of mental and physical strength. The organization believes that a successful career in hospitality requires both skill and resilience, and its programs are designed to instill these attributes in students.

IIHM has increasingly faced challenges related to interviewing in addition to assessing and creating educational content. For instance, IIHM recognized the opportunity to modernize and enhance its processes to align with the evolving needs of students and the education sector. The institute identified areas where technological advancements could streamline interview management, improve student engagement, and enable personalized feedback for students. By shifting from manual processes to automated solutions, IIHM aimed to create a more efficient and consistent evaluation system, ensuring optimal outcomes for both students and educators.

To foster a dynamic learning environment, IIHM sought to upgrade its educational platform with interactive features that allow real-time knowledge testing and personalized educator feedback. Additionally, the institute prioritized the integration of data-driven insights to continuously refine curriculum content and teaching strategies, ensuring students receive the most relevant and impactful learning experiences. As the student base and educational demands grew, IIHM saw the need for a scalable and adaptive IT infrastructure. By embracing innovative technologies, the institute aimed to optimize resource management, reduce operational overheads, and expand its offerings seamlessly, reflecting its commitment to excellence and future-readiness.

Solution

Using AWS Generative AI to Streamline Key Processes

IIHM chose to move its IT environment to Amazon Web Services (AWS) to overcome its challenges, working with Workmates, anjgjgy AWS Generative AI Competency Partner, to build and deploy a new application platform using AWS generative artificial intelligence (AI). After collaborating with Workmates to conduct a detailed assessment and plan for implementing AI-driven solutions, IIHM implemented an Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (Amazon VPC) environment to securely isolate and manage network resources.

The new solution takes advantage of Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) instances to host the API server and other application services, and it uses Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) for storing educational materials, interview recordings, and backup data. AWS Auto Scaling manages changes in load and ensures the continuous availability of all services. For generative AI capabilities, IIHM relies on Amazon Bedrock and Anthropic’s Claude 3.5 Haiku model. Amazon Bedrock enhanced Claude 3.5 Haiku by providing a scalable and secure environment to simplify deployment, with Amazon Bedrock pre-built integrations enabling the rapid experimentation and customization of the model to meet specific user needs. IIHM established Amazon Bedrock guardrails to monitor outputs and maintain compliance with ethical guidelines, including user confirmation for critical interactions. The institute employed BLEU scoring to compare generated text against reference outputs and ROUGE scoring to measure recall and precision for further model evaluation. “Amazon Bedrock's capabilities have been transformative, helping us achieve 30 percent better model performance while continuously evolving our AI solutions for education,” says Basanta Kumar Rana, Co-founder of Workmates. “Our AWS Generative AI Competency validation strengthens our position as a trusted partner in educational innovation, enabling institutions like IIHM to revolutionize both learning experiences and recruitment processes.”

For AI-powered interview management, IIHM integrated Talent Talker with Amazon Transcribe for accurate speech-to-text conversion during interviews, along with Amazon Bedrock to enhance the chatbot’s capabilities in generating relevant questions and analyzing interview candidate responses. The institute also deployed TutorWise to provide interactive quizzes, mock tests, and real-time student engagement. Amazon Bedrock generates personalized learning content and assessments, while Amazon Textract digitizes and analyzes printed or handwritten educational materials. Automated content review processes in Amazon Bedrock ensure educational materials are relevant and updated.

While creating the new application environment, IIHM also enhanced security by using AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) for secure access control and permissions and by encrypting data at rest and in transit with AWS Key Management Service (AWS KMS). The institute implemented role-based access controls to restrict access to sensitive data and administrative functions, and it uses authentication and authorization mechanisms such as multi-factor authentication (MFA) for additional protection. IIHM also secures APIs that integrate the AI chatbot with other systems by using authentication tokens and ensuring that API endpoints are protected from unauthorized access.

Outcome

Identifying Candidates Faster and Enhancing Education

IIHM met its business objectives for interviewing by implementing the AWS generative AI solution. For instance, the solution streamlined and automated the recruitment process to make interviews 50 percent faster, helping the institute more efficiently screen and identify the best candidates for hospitality roles. Talent Talker provides candidates with instant, 100 percent consistent feedback and a uniform evaluation process, resulting in smoother, interactive, and more transparent interviews. Additionally, Talent Talker delivers detailed, data-driven insights on candidates to enable objective hiring with 90 percent accuracy. Since combining Talent Talker and TutorWise, IIHM has seen 20–30 percent higher placement rates of its students, who are now better prepared for job recruitment in top hospitality organizations.

IIHM also improved its content creation and student experience by using the new AWS solution. Continuous oversight facilitated by Amazon Bedrock guardrails helped IIHM maintain a 95 percent accuracy rate in content generation, and interactive learning tools help students retain complex concepts more effectively. In addition, students are benefiting from personalized learning experiences that increase overall performance.

Educators are seeing positive results because the new solution enables real-time assessments for guiding students and enhancing learning. Surveys indicate that 75 percent of educators and students are feeling more secure interacting with AI-generated content, which helps foster a more engaging learning environment. With its new platform, IIHM is now better equipped to prepare for the future. Amazon Bedrock guardrail insights have contributed to a 30 percent improvement in model performance over time, so the institute is confident its AI solutions will continuously evolve to align with the needs of both educators and students.
