  • Asurion
  • Atlassian

Asurion is a leading provider of device insurance, warranty, and support service, and its experts can repair, replace, and resolve nearly any consumer tech issue. Asurion uses an array of Amazon Web Services (AWS) technologies and performs real-time analysis of customer experience during support calls using ML on AWS Lambda, but struggled with fitting those call recordings in the AWS Lambda /tmp space. Asurion solved the issue by using Amazon Elastic File System (Amazon EFS) to give extended storage space to its ML functions running in AWS Lambda. Now, Asurion’s ML inference infrastructure scales elastically with call volume, and it has reduced operational overhead, as compared to maintaining instances and auto-scaling.

"We really wanted to use AWS Lambda to make our ML inference elastic but thought we wouldn’t be able to because of the size of data the process required. With Amazon EFS, we were easily able to give our function all of the storage space it needs.”

Jeff Tougas, Senior Principal Software Engineer - Asurion

Johnson & Johnson data science and business experts collaborate to incorporate science into healthcare solutions, including medical device and diagnostic technologies, consumer healthcare products, and pharmaceuticals. Johnson & Johnson needed storage to share and perform analytics on their data science workbench for genomics neuroscience, R & D, and drug discovery. A massively scalable solution was required to share and analyze 100s of TB of data from external and internal studies. Also, their existing on-premises storage had limited scale and high overhead.

By containerizing its hosting application and running it on Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (Amazon EKS), using Amazon Elastic File System (Amazon EFS) for persistent storage, Amazon Elastic File System (Amazon EFS) provides performant analytics storage with shared file access to data scientists using open-source genomics and Shiny, as well as Domino Data Labs, running on an Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS) cluster. The solution scales elastically to 500TiB and growing. Since implementing the solution, Johnson & Johnson has increased innovation and delivered faster-time to insights with access to new datasets, reducing analysis time by 35%. They’ve also reduced costs by 37%, using EFS Lifecycle management and lower cost EFS One Zone storage classes.

“Data scientists need access to massive data from different sources for genomics, R&D, and drug discovery to perform advanced analytics. With Amazon EFS, we were able to share data on a massive scale, increase innovation by accelerating analytics, and save 37% in costs.”

Greg Rusin, IT Manager - Johnson & Johnson

  • Acquia
  • Atlassian

Acquia’s software and services are built around Drupal to give enterprise companies the ability to build, operate, and optimize websites, applications, and other digital experiences. Acquia is continuously seeking to improve its web hosting environment to enhance customer experience, while operating as efficiently as possible. By containerizing its hosting application and running it on Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (Amazon EKS), using Amazon Elastic File System (Amazon EFS) for persistent storage, Acquia was able to dynamically scale its customer environments, improving customer experience. At the same time, Acquia lowered its TCO through improved storage and compute utilization and further reduced administrative burden by leveraging fully managed services from Amazon Web Services (AWS).

"By containerizing our hosting applications and running them on Amazon EKS and Amazon EFS, we have improved our customer experience, while considerably reducing our infrastructure and operational maintenance overhead.”

Jake Farrell, Senior Director of Engineering - Acquia

  • Federated Wireless
  • Atlassian

Federated Wireless enables commercial use of the Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS) wireless band by dynamically managing the shared spectrum using cloud-based technology and machine learning. Operating a CBRS wireless network requires daily jobs to calculate “path loss” for registered devices. The company sought a solution that could scale these jobs to keep pace with rapid growth of its CBRS wireless network. To do so, Federated Wireless turned to Amazon Web Services (AWS).

The Federated Wireless solution uses Amazon Elastic File System (Amazon EFS) for elastic, shared data storage and launches tasks that calculate “path loss” in Amazon Elastic Container Service (Amazon ECS) on Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) Spot Instances to cost-effectively parallelize across hundreds of instances. As a result, Federated Wireless has reduced execution times for tasks that calculate “path loss” by 30 percent and is able to dynamically scale, increasing the number of devices its network can handle.

"Amazon EFS and Amazon ECS have allowed us to dynamically scale our Spectrum Access System (SAS) platform to keep up with the rapid growth of our wireless business.”

Saijee Varghese, Sr. Director, Engineering - Federated Wireless

  • SkyWatch
  • Atlassian

SkyWatch discovers and accesses satellite imagery, and remote sensing datasets, bringing insights through geospatial analytics. SkyWatch uses AWS Lambda and Amazon Elastic File System (Amazon EFS) to process satellite images. Their pipeline turns raw image data into tiles through a series of AWS Lambda invocations, to a final processed result. Amazon EFS is used as a low-latency shared file system that scales to the volume of image data. SkyWatch is able to complete image processing faster, at lower costs through reduced operational overhead, with an infrastructure that scales elastically with image volume.

"AWS Lambda lets us easily run large-scale image applications, and Amazon EFS enables us to concurrently process shared data with a low latency file system through a multi-stage image processing pipeline, scaling elastically with image volume.”

Luis Veci, Image Processing Software Lead - SkyWatch
