5 social enterprises building a global response to the mental health crisis using AWS

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that one in seven adolescents lives with a mental health condition, but access to care is limited. Children in low- and middle-income countries have access to fewer than 0.1 per 100,000 psychiatrists who specialize in treating children and adolescents.

Although access in the U.S. increases 100-fold, only 20 percent of children received care from a specialized mental health provider. The barriers are systemic, with too few trained professionals, geographic isolation, cultural stigma, and costs that exclude the most vulnerable populations. Across four continents, a new generation of builders is refusing to accept these constraints as permanent.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) supports social enterprises with access to AI and cloud technology as they work to make mental health care more accessible, culturally responsive, and stigma-free. In this post, learn how organizations from Seoul and Nairobi to Melbourne are developing AI-driven platforms, immersive therapeutics, and digital phenotyping tools that bring mental health support out of clinical silos and into the places where people already live, learn, and connect.

3R Innovation: Rethinking early detection in Korea

Almost half of mental health disorders begin before age 18, with the peak age of onset at 14.5 years. Distress may first surface during everyday schoolwork through changes in attention, reduced engagement, difficulty regulating emotions, or shifts in keyboard and stylus behavior — well before a young person reaches a clinician.

3R Innovation Inc. created Dr. Simon, an AI-driven digital phenotyping engine which analyzes smartphone and school-issued tablet data for diagnosis and ongoing assessment. Based on peer-reviewed research associating school-task keyboard and stylus patterns with depressive symptoms and internet gaming disorder, Dr. Simon uses advanced analytics to understand patterns and behaviors to detect early signs of mental health and learning issues. It uses that information to guide youth through virtual therapy sessions intended to promote attention, learning, and wellbeing.

Delivered through Focuspang, Dr. Simon for Education supports 500,000 users across 1,200 institutions, primarily in South Korea, ranging from kindergarten through graduate school. Delivery at this scale is possible with AWS managed services, Amazon Elastic Container Service (Amazon ECS) and AWS Fargate, to build, manage, and run Dr. Simon, with data securely stored in a serverless Amazon Aurora database. The impact from Dr. Simon is measurable: a 2025 study of secondary students reported statistically significant improvements in selective attention (34.7 percent), sustained attention (38.8 percent), and self-control (3.2 percent) following use of Dr. Simon.

“When we treat mental health as part of everyday youth development rather than something that only surfaces in a clinical setting, we help reduce stigma and give the adults in a child’s life the chance to notice and respond earlier,” said Dr. Kwangsu Cho, founder and CEO at 3R Innovation. “That belief guides where we’re headed next: we’re piloting Dr. Simon for Families to bring this kind of early, supportive awareness into the home, and we’re exploring a version for professionals in the years ahead.”

CogniX: Removing barriers to care across Africa

In Africa, 150 million people live with a mental health condition, yet 75 percent receive no treatment, representing the highest disparity globally. With a ratio of mental health professionals to population as low as 1.4 per 100,000, traditional care models simply cannot reach those in need. Cost, distance, and deeply embedded cultural stigma create compounding barriers, particularly for youth, low-income individuals, and those in remote areas.

CogniX LTD built MOYO, an AI-powered holistic wellbeing platform equipped with therapeutic tools and wearable technology. Powered by generative and agentic AI and rooted in local cultural contexts, the platform offers 24/7 emotional support, clinical assessments, self-help tools, and crisis triage with escalation to local helplines for human professional support.

“We aim to scale to 10,000+ users, expand to more than 10 African languages, and build institutional partnerships with employers, universities, and insurers to drive adoption and impact,” said Eugene Muiru, CEO and cofounder at CogniX. “By combining cutting-edge AI with deep cultural understanding and community engagement, we are building a movement to make holistic wellbeing accessible to every African, regardless of language, location, or income.”

Enrichly: Self-esteem as an early behavioral health indicator

Enrichly is an AI-powered pediatric behavioral health infrastructure platform that helps healthcare and community organizations identify children earlier, deliver personalized digital interventions, and track outcomes in a closed-loop system. Rather than stopping at screening, Enrichly connects assessment, provider-directed intervention, engagement, and outcomes measurement to help organizations move from reactive care to earlier, more preventive support.

Self-esteem is a key part of that approach. Enrichly uses assessments and personalized digital experiences to help strengthen confidence, resilience, emotional regulation, and other behavioral health skills. The platform has reached more than 200,000 children globally, with 50,000+ children contributing to the development of its content. Across programs, Enrichly has seen more than 75 percent intervention completion rates, self-esteem improvements ranging from 40-70 percent, and more than 85 percent of participating children reaching healthy or average self-esteem levels in certain implementations.

AWS has played an important role in Enrichly’s ability to build and scale its technology. Enrichly uses Amazon Bedrock and Amazon SageMaker to support its Mental Wellness Assistant and personalization capabilities. Bedrock supports the conversational experience, helping users engage with the platform through natural-language questions, while SageMaker supports the machine learning and recommendation layer that helps Enrichly surface more relevant content and interventions based on user needs and engagement patterns. Enrichly’s AI is designed to augment provider workflows and improve personalization, not replace clinical judgment.

“Through AWS programs, including its collaboration with Halcyon, we’ve been able to build and test enterprise-grade AI and cloud infrastructure while preserving our resources for product development, validation, and growth,” said Margo Jordan, founder and CEO at Enrichly. “Access to that kind of technical infrastructure and capacity, alongside the guidance and partnership we received, has been especially meaningful as an underrepresented founder. It’s given us the space to build a compelling, scalable behavioral health platform.”

Orygen: Immersive therapeutics in Australia

Orygen, Australia’s leading youth mental health research organization and the first WHO Collaborating Centre for Young People’s Mental Health, is pioneering Orygen Virtual Worlds (OVW). It’s an immersive environment where young people connect through personalized avatars, practice social skills in controlled settings, and engage with therapeutic activities designed specifically for youth mental health care. OVW also increases access for young people whose mental ill-health makes it difficult to leave the house.

The platform addresses a fundamental problem: while young people may prefer virtual-world interaction to conventional video-conferencing telehealth, existing commercial platforms are not suitable for clinical use given the privacy and safety demands of a therapeutic setting. OVW was co-designed with young people and clinicians to be a safe, engaging, accessible environment that better reflects how they naturally interact online.

In a pilot study, 23 young people used the platform and rated it highly acceptable, with no safety incidents reported. Many participants went on to attend an in-person group therapy program after completing OVW, suggesting that immersive care acts as a bridge rather than barrier to face-to-face services. The main limitation was accessibility, as participation required a high-end gaming computer, preventing some young people from taking part.

By leveraging Amazon GameLift Streams to deliver compute-intensive immersive environments without requiring high-end local hardware, Orygen is removing that high-end gaming computer barrier. Through GameLift Streams, Orygen makes OVW accessible to a broader group of young people, including those who struggle to leave home, live in geographically isolated areas, or cannot attend clinical services in person. The upgraded version of the platform will launch with the next participant cohort in October 2026.

Our Wave: AI safety and survivors of sexual violence

The organizations above represent a spectrum of approaches to the mental health crisis, but one of the most important frontiers lies at the intersection of AI safety and trauma recovery: ensuring the AI tools people use for mental health support are safe for the most vulnerable populations.

Since 2019, Our Wave, a U.S.-based nonprofit supporting survivors of sexual violence, made more than 268,000 resource referrals to a community of over 558,000 survivors and allies across 79 countries. For years, every survivor who came to Our Wave saw the same static list of hotlines and services, no matter who they were or what they had been through. This year, Our Wave changed that by shifting to a Bedrock-based retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) system designed with, and for, survivors. This new tool reads the meaning behind what a survivor actually writes, matching their story to the resources that fit their specific situation rather than just their location.

Understanding that meaning is important and independent research shows why. Dr. Sachiko Kita, a collaborator from the Institute of Trauma Recovery in Japan, tested an AI tool on transcripts from 17 Japanese survivors and found the AI consistently misread survivors who were struggling as hopeful, classifying them in more recovered states than trained human interviewers would.

This happens “even when survivors repeatedly described painful looping experiences and overwhelming emotions,” said Dr. Kita. “If there was a single hopeful statement at the end, the AI tended to interpret this as ‘the survivor is overwhelmed but still hopeful,’ and classify them in a more recovered state.” Our Wave doesn’t let any AI-assisted feature, including resource matching, reach a survivor without a human checking it first. Every resource in the library is vetted before it enters the matching pool.

“We have an ethical obligation to make sure the delivery of any content that’s survivor-facing is read by a human with expertise and validated before it goes out,” said Dr. Laura Sinko, Our Wave’s director of research and survivor support. “Not only for the accuracy, but also for the language and the voice we’re delivering it in.”

AWS supports Our Wave with access to AI and cloud technology as it builds out a large language model-based mental health solution. Our Wave CTO and Cofounder Brendan Michaelson is also part of the Now Go Build CTO Fellowship. Led by Amazon CTO Dr. Werner Vogels, the Fellowship provides tech leaders in social impact organizations with training, mentorship, and access to AWS experts. The AWS-Our Wave collaboration represents a model for responsible AI development in social impact: technology designed for efficiency as well as safety, dignity, and survivor agency.

What’s next: A global problem requires a global response

Connecting these five organizations is a shared focus on mental health and conviction that the barriers to care are design problems that technology can help solve when built with the right values. These builders are demonstrating that responsible innovation can extend the reach of mental health support to those who need it most.
