Amazon EC2 R8a instances
New memory-optimized instances powered by 5th Generation AMD EPYC processors
Why Amazon EC2 R8a instances?
Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) R8a instances are next generation memory-optimized instances powered by 5th Gen AMD EPYC processors, with a maximum frequency of 4.5 GHz. They deliver up to 30% better performance than R7a instances, with even higher gains for some workloads.
R8a instances are SAP certified and ideal for high performance, memory-intensive workloads, such as SQL and NoSQL databases, distributed web scale in-memory caches, in-memory databases, real-time big data analytics, large-scale enterprise applications, big data processing engines, high-performance databases, memory-intensive analytics, and Electronic Design Automation (EDA) applications.
Benefits
Powered by AMD EPYC processors with a maximum frequency of 4.5 GHz, R8a instances deliver up to 30% higher compute performance compared to previous generation instances. When compared to R7a instances, they provide up to 60% faster performance for GroovyJVM benchmark, allowing higher request throughput and better response times for business-critical applications.
The R8a instances offer up to 19% better price-performance compared to previous generation AMD-based instances. This improved efficiency helps optimize your operational costs while delivering better value for your cloud investment. Multiple purchasing options, including Savings Plans, On-Demand, and Spot instances, provide additional flexibility to manage costs. Better price performance enables you to reduce your fleet size or use smaller instance sizes to lower costs while improving performance.
Provides extensive configuration options with ten virtualized sizes (from 1 to 192 vCPUs) and two bare metal variants. This flexibility extends to Instance Bandwidth Configuration (IBC) feature, allowing you to boost network or EBS bandwidth by up to 25% to match your specific workload requirements and optimize application performance.
Features
Leverage 5th Generation AMD EPYC processors (formerly code named "Turin") with a maximum frequency of 4.5 GHz. Each vCPU on a R8a instance is a physical CPU core. This means there is no Simultaneous Multi-Threading (SMT). Experience enhanced security with always-on memory encryption using AMD Secure Memory Encryption (SME), now supporting AES-256 encryption for even stronger data protection.
R8a instances deliver 45% higher memory bandwidth compared to R7a instances. Benefit from 50% increase in network throughput of up to 75 Gbps and EBS bandwidth of up to 60 Gbps. Attach up to 128 EBS volumes per instance for extensive storage scalability.
Amazon EC2 R8a instances are SAP-certified, and provide 38% more SAPS compared to Amazon EC2 R7a instances. Take advantage of expanded instruction set support, including AVX-512, VNNI, and bfloat16. These capabilities enable efficient execution for broad range of memory-intensive workloads, including convolutional neural network-based algorithms, financial analytics, and video encoding.
The AWS Nitro System is the foundation of our EC2 instances, enabling AWS to innovate faster, further reduce cost for our customers, and deliver added benefits like increased security and new instance types. These instances are built using the latest sixth generation AWS Nitro Cards, which offload and accelerate I/O for functions, increasing overall system performance.
