Keynote

Kick off the AWS Public Sector Summit Online with a keynote address from Teresa Carlson, former vice president of AWS worldwide public sector and industries, and Max Peterson, current vice president of AWS worldwide public sector. In this address, Teresa and Max will take a look at innovative breakthroughs happening among public sector organizations from across the globe and discuss how public sector organizations can continue to push boundaries in service of their missions. 

Adarryl Roberts, program executive officer (PEO) of the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA), Sarah Wilkinson, chief executive officer (CEO) of National Health Service (NHS) Digital, Rod Bristow, president of Pearson, and Dr. Michael Snyder, professor, chair of genetics, and director of the center of genomics and personalized medicine of Stanford University will also share how they are leveraging the cloud to further drive their missions. Finally, Teresa will sit down for a fireside chat with Maureen Lonergan, director of AWS Training and Certification, and Dr. Tarika Barrett, CEO of Girls Who Code. The three women will discuss how equitable training and skills development can contribute to building an inclusive and diverse workforce.

Max Peterson is vice president of international sales for the AWS worldwide public sector. In this role, Peterson supports public sector organizations as they leverage the unique advantages of commercial cloud to drive innovation among government, educational institutions, healthcare institutions, and nonprofits around the world. He is responsible for all AWS public sector sales, business operations, and strategy across Europe, Middle East, Africa, Latin America, and Canada. Peterson is a public sector industry veteran with 30 years of experience and has an extensive background in developing relationships with public sector customers, as well as system integrators, solution providers, independent software vendors, and value-added resellers.

Mr. Adarryl M. Roberts is responsible for the management and oversight of DLA's Major Automated Information Systems and special interest programs. The DLA appointed Roberts to the senior executive service and selected him as the PEO for the DLA in 2019. Prior to this role, Roberts held a variety of positions at the DLA, Business Transformation Agency, Army Business Center for Acquisition Systems, CACI, Inc., and the United States Air Force. Roberts’ awards include the Air Force Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Ribbon, Outstanding Unit Ribbon, and Air Force Squadron/Group Company Grade Officer of the Year.

Sarah Wilkinson is the CEO of NHS Digital, the executive body of the Department of Health and Social Care, which provides information, data, and IT systems for health and social care nationally. Prior to joining NHS Digital, Wilkinson was chief information officer (CIO) at the Home Office. She previously worked in financial services where she held CIO roles at Credit Suisse, UBS, Deutsche Bank, and Lehman Brothers. Wilkinson is also a non-executive director of NatWest Markets, a member of the Audit, Risk and Compliance Committee of Kings College London, and a member of the advisory board of the Department of Computing at Imperial College. In each of the last four years, Wilkinson has been named within the top ten in the TechUK 50, Computer Weekly’s annual ranking of the Top 50 Most Influential Leaders in the UK IT Industry.

Rod Bristow leads Pearson’s global online learning businesses in schools, higher education, and employer based learning, in addition to his role as president for Pearson UK. Bristow has led Pearson UK since 2010. From 2014 to 2019, he also led all other core markets for Pearson. Bristow has worked in education, publishing, and assessment for more than 30 years in universities, schools, colleges, professional training, and learning technologies in the UK and internationally. Bristow is a trustee for the Education and Employers Taskforce, a fellow of the Royal Society for Arts, governor for Harlow College and the BMAT multi-academy trust, and past president of the Publishers Association. He is also chair of the judging panel for the National Teaching Awards.

Dr. Michael Snyder received his Ph.D. training at the California Institute of Technology and carried out postdoctoral training at Stanford University. He is a leader in the field of functional genomics and multiomics, and one of the major participants of the ENCODE project. His laboratory study was the first to perform a large-scale functional genomics project in any organism and has developed many technologies in genomics and proteomics. Snyder launched the field of personalized medicine by combining different state-of–the-art “omics” technologies to perform the first longitudinal detailed integrative personal omics profile (iPOP) of a person. His laboratory also pioneered the use of wearables technologies, including smart watches and continuous glucose monitoring, for precision health. Snyder is a cofounder of several biotechnology companies, including Personalis, SensOmics, Qbio, January, Protos, Oralome, Mirvie, and Filtricine.

Dr. Tarika Barrett oversees Girls Who Code’s free Summer Immersion Program and after-school Clubs Program, which have reached 300,000 girls around the world. She also oversees international programming, alumni programming, and People and Culture teams. Prior to joining Girls Who Code, Barrett was chief program officer at iMentor and led the organization’s programmatic efforts to build mentoring relationships that support students from low-income communities in graduating high school and succeeding in college. She previously worked in the Office of Postsecondary Readiness at the New York City Department of Education and served as deputy network leader of the Brooklyn-Staten Island Network of New Visions for Public Schools. Barrett also serves on the boards of McGraw Hill and Eskolta.

Maureen Lonergan leads a team of builders committed to training the next generation of diverse cloud talent. Lonergan empowers AWS customers, partners, and employees to gain the skills and knowledge needed to leverage the power of the AWS Cloud. Lonergan launched AWS Training and Certification in 2012 with the vision of delivering new training and certification programs to meet learners where they are and to rapidly proliferate cloud skills. Her team has built a robust portfolio of flexible training offerings, alongside an industry-leading certification program. They are continuing to deliver innovative cloud learning opportunities. Education programs from Training and Certification, including AWS Academy and AWS re/Start, are building a pipeline of cloud talent to meet the demands of the future.
