Amazon RDS Enables Encryption at Rest for Additional T2 Instance Types

Posted on: Jun 27, 2017

Amazon RDS now supports encryption at rest for db.t2.small and db.t2.medium database instances. This support is available for the MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, Oracle and SQL Server database engines, and can use AWS Key Management Service (KMS) or the engines’ Transparent Data Encryption technologies if available.

Encryption on smaller T2 database instances is useful for development and test use cases, where you want the environment to have identical security characteristics as the planned production environment. You can also run small production workloads on T2 database instances, to save money without compromising on security.

Encryption does not incur any additional charges. For more information on encryption at rest, see the Amazon RDS User Guide. Please see Amazon RDS Pricing for regional availability of the db.t2.small and db.t2.medium instance types.
