Some include the European Space Agency, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, National Science Foundation, and National Institutes of Health. “Modern high energy physics (HEP) experiments require massive computing resources in irregular cycles, so it is imperative for the success of our program that our computing facilities can rapidly expand and contract resources to match demand. Using commercial clouds is an important ingredient for achieving this goal, and our work with AWS on the CMS experiment’s workloads through HEPCloud was a great success in demonstrating the value of this approach.”

  • The AWS Cloud Credit for Research Program supports researchers who seek to:

    • Build cloud-hosted publicly available science as a service applications, software, or tools to facilitate their future research and the research of their community.
    • Perform proof of concept or benchmark tests evaluating the efficacy of moving research workloads or open datasets to the cloud.
    • Train a broader community on the usage of cloud for research workloads via workshops or tutorials.
  • AWS Machine Learning Research Awards
  • Funds eligible universities, faculty, PhD students, and post-docs under the supervision of faculty, that are advancing the state-of-the-art in machine learning (ML).

  • Amazon Research Awards
  • The program offers awards of up to $80,000 to faculty members at academic institutions worldwide for research in several areas.

  • AWS Global Data Egress Waiver
  • AWS customers are eligible for a waiver of egress charges under this program if they:

    • Work in academic or research institutions.
    • Have access to AWS DirectConnect through an approved National Research and Education (NREN) network to connect to AWS, such as Internet2, ESnet, GÉANT, Janet, SingAREN, SINET, AARNet, CANARIE, and more. Most research institutions use these government-funded, dedicated networks to connect to AWS, while realizing higher network performance, better bandwidth, and stability.
    • Use institutional e-mail addresses for AWS accounts.
    • Work in an approved AWS region.
