AWS Graviton2-based database instances are now generally available for Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS). Graviton2 instances provide up to 35% performance improvement and up to 52% price/performance improvement for RDS open source databases depending on database engine, version, and workload. You can launch these database instances when using Amazon RDS for MySQL, Amazon RDS for PostgreSQL, and Amazon RDS for MariaDB. Support for Amazon Aurora is coming soon.
AWS Graviton2 processors are custom built by Amazon Web Services using 64-bit Arm Neoverse cores and deliver several performance optimizations over first-generation AWS Graviton processors. This includes 7x the performance, 4x the number of compute cores, 2x larger private caches per core, 5x faster memory, and 2x faster floating-point performance per core. Additionally, the AWS Graviton2 processors feature always-on fully encrypted DDR4 memory and 50% faster per core encryption performance.
Its performance improvements like these, which make Graviton2 M6g and R6g database instances a great choice for database workloads, that have spurred hundreds of thousands of customers to migrate their databases to AWS over the last several years. As of September 2020, more than 300,000 databases have been migrated to AWS using the AWS Database Migration Service (DMS). DMS is a fully managed service that allows customers to migrate their relational databases, non-relational databases, and data warehouses to AWS with virtually no downtime.
You can launch new Graviton2 M6g and R6g database instances in the Amazon RDS Management Console or using the AWS CLI. Upgrading a database instance to Graviton2 requires a simple instance type modification, using the same steps as any other instance modification. Graviton2 instances are supported on Amazon RDS for MySQL versions 8.0.17 and higher, RDS for PostgreSQL versions 12.3 and higher, and Amazon RDS for MariaDB versions 10.4.13 and higher. Your applications will continue to work as normal and you will not have to port any application code. For more details, refer to the documentation.
The M6g and R6g database instances are now available for Amazon RDS in the US East (N. Virginia, Ohio), US West (Oregon), Europe (Ireland, Frankfurt), and Asia Pacific (Mumbai, Singapore, Sydney, Tokyo) regions.
