InfoWorld awarded Amazon Aurora "Editor's Choice" after an in-depth review. InfoWorld says "Amazon's revved-up database service offers five times the throughput of MySQL and a formidable alternative to Oracle and SQL Server".

Amazon Aurora is a MySQL-compatible relational database that combines the performance, reliability and availability of high-end commercial databases with the cost and simplicity of open source databases. There is no minimum commitment, no up-front fees and no licenses to worry about. Costs typically run at 1/10th that of a commercial database system. As part of Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS), Amazon Aurora manages routine database tasks including provisioning, patching, backup, recovery, failure detection and repair.

Amazon Aurora is highly available and highly durable. It replicates six copies of your data across three Availability Zones, is designed for greater than 99.99% availability, and continuously backs up your data in S3. Aurora is highly scalable, with the ability to automatically grow storage from 10GB up to 64TB. Aurora is also highly secure, isolating your data in a VPC and automatically encrypting your data in transit and at rest.
