Building tomorrow’s healthcare applications with University Hospital Essen and the AWS European Sovereign Cloud

University Hospital Essen accelerates development of interoperable clinical AI, maintaining full control over sensitive patient data while enabling secure, compliant progress across its digital health initiatives using the AWS European Sovereign Cloud.

Overview

University Hospital Essen uses Amazon Web Services (AWS) to scale advanced clinical artificial intelligence (AI) into secure, production ready applications. Using the AWS European Sovereign Cloud, the hospital can unify clinical data, deploy imaging AI globally, and meet strict General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and residency requirements. AI and Data Science Team Lead René Hosch says this sovereign foundation is essential for moving from research prototypes to real world healthcare solutions that improve patient care.

About University Hospital Essen

University Hospital Essen is a leading German academic medical center and the largest hospital in the Ruhr region. Specializing in oncology, cardiology, and transplant medicine, it treats over 240,000 patients annually. It houses the West German Cancer Center (WTZ) and is a pioneer in proton therapy and smart hospital initiatives.

Shaping clinical innovation through interoperable data and AI

University Hospital Essen is one of Germany’s leading centers for specialist and intensive medicine, treating more than 240,000 patients a year across 27 departments. As a pioneer of the Smart Hospital model, it brings together interoperability, AI, and clinical data science to reinvent how care is delivered. A key example is its AI‑driven body composition analysis, which Hosch says is one of his team’s “most exciting projects,” powered by algorithms that extract biomarkers such as visceral fat and muscle mass directly from advanced medical imaging data. By using AWS, Essen can scale this capability beyond its own institution, enabling other hospitals and end users to benefit from the same cloud-based insight.

The body composition work sits within a broader digital architecture designed to make clinical data more accessible and actionable. A core pillar of that strategy is the Smart Hospital Information Platform (SHIP). SHIP unifies all primary clinical systems into a single data lake using the Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) standard, giving researchers governed access to longitudinal patient data, imaging, laboratory results, and device streams. This interoperability backbone allows Essen to accelerate research, support AI development, and build the digital infrastructure for the future of clinical care.

Scaling sensitive healthcare AI with the AWS European Sovereign Cloud

For University Hospital Essen, digital sovereignty is central to how clinical data is handled and how AI is scaled. “Digital sovereignty is a priority for us as a hospital because we work with very sensitive patient data,” says Hosch. “The AWS European Sovereign Cloud enables us to build our applications in a trustworthy and GDPR-compliant environment, which is fundamental to scale up our applications and make a difference in the development of healthcare applications of tomorrow.”

Working in this sovereign cloud environment, Essen can move quickly and safely from early-stage research models to production‑grade AI. “AWS enables us to bring isolated research prototypes from research settings into scalable applications,” says Hosch. “Services like Amazon SageMaker, Amazon Bedrock, AWS Lambda, Amazon EC2, and many more are very important to scale these applications.”
