How Amazon GameLift Streams is boosting game discoverability on Twitch

What if you could demo a game instantly? No download. No wait time. No additional sign-in. Just real gameplay, streamed straight to your browser.

Game discovery remains one of the gaming industry’s most stubborn challenges. Every year, thousands of titles launch across PC, console, and mobile, but the path from this looks interesting to I’m trying it out remains surprisingly difficult; the leap from watching to experiencing still requires too much commitment.

For developers and publishers, the gap is even wider. Building a great game is only half the battle; without a way for players to experience it firsthand, building a player base relies on secondhand impressions. While trailers generate hype and reviews build credibility, neither can replicate the engagement of letting players experience the game for themselves.

This leads to the question the industry has been trying to answer for years: how do you get a game in front of players, at scale, the moment they’re most interested?

The problem

On a PC, the answer has historically been, you can’t. Not easily.

Traditional game demos have been locked to a single platform, limiting reach to players already browsing that storefront and ignoring the millions who live elsewhere. These demos require downloads that demand significant storage, inconvenient install times, and timely setup, creating a barrier that filters out casual interest. Even when a demo’s available, the experience is often surface level: a guided 5-minute (or less) walkthrough that doesn’t represent true gameplay.

The result? Too many steps, too many barriers, and too much friction standing between a curious player and a game they might love. Discovery and experience remain disconnected, and on PC systems specifically, the gap remains persistent at scale.

The solution

Amazon GameLift Streams Instant Play Demos is designed to close this gap.

The concept is straightforward: a player sees an ad on Twitch, clicks play, and is instantly in-game from their browser. A real, full-fidelity AAA (high-budget, studio-produced) experience with no download or installs required. The game streams from AWS cloud infrastructure in real time: video and audio is delivered to the player and input is sent back to the server with no perceptible difference from playing a locally installed title.

But what makes this technology meaningful is the depth of experience. Players get 15–20 minutes of uninterrupted gameplay with the actual title; enough time to explore, form an opinion, and understand if this is something they want to invest in. It’s the closest thing to ownership without the commitment of purchasing a game, delivered at the exact moment a player is most intrigued.

For developers and publishers

For game studios, the operational lift is minimal. Publishers provide an executable game build and Amazon GameLift Streams manages the entire pipeline: global infrastructure deployment across the AWS network of Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) instances, quality assurance to ensure the streaming experience meets standards, analytics and reporting on player engagement, and ongoing operations to keep the demo live.

This matters because it dramatically reduces the friction that has historically made PC demos impractical for most players. While the channel existed, downloads, storage requirements, and platform lock-in meant only the most committed players ever made it through. Now, publishers can get their game in front of some of the most engaged gaming audiences on the internet without those traditional tradeoffs. The infrastructure is fully managed, the audience is already there, and the experience speaks for itself.

How it works

The process starts when publishers provide a digital rights management (DRM)-free binary build of their game to AWS. AWS then uploads the build to an Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) bucket and configures the build for streaming. From that point forward, everything is automatically managed by AWS: infrastructure autoscaling, computing and AWS Region selection, and stream optimization with no manual configuration required from the studio. On the distribution side, AWS works with the publisher’s chosen platform to implement the browser-based gameplay landing page and call-to-action.

When a player launches a game through Instant Play Demos, Amazon GameLift Streams orchestrates a session and establishes a direct WebRTC connection between the player’s browser and the cloud instance. The server handles the heavy lifting (rendering graphics, running game logic, processing physics) and sends compressed video and audio frames to the player in real time. Player inputs like keyboard, mouse, and controller actions stream back to the server over that same low-latency connection. The result is a fully interactive experience that runs entirely in the cloud with nothing to download or install on the player’s device.

Discovery and experimentation with Twitch

Instant Play Demos need more than great technology to succeed; they need an outlet where gamers are already engaged and naturally curious. That’s where Twitch comes in.

Twitch is the world’s leading live streaming service for gaming, with a 60% global market share and more than 105 million average monthly visitors. As an Amazon-owned service, the partnership with Amazon GameLift Streams is a natural fit: The Amazon cloud infrastructure paired with its most prominent consumer-facing gaming service.

But what makes Twitch uniquely suited for Instant Play Demos isn’t only the scale of the site, but its audience. Twitch viewers aren’t passively scrolling; they’re actively immersed in gaming culture, watching creators they trust, discovering titles in chat, and constantly looking for their next game. When an Instant Play Demo appears in that environment, it doesn’t feel like an interruption; it feeds directly into a curiosity that’s already there.

Though still in an exploratory phase, the early results are encouraging. Today, Instant Play Demos are live on Twitch across five titles: Dragon Age: The Veilguard, REANIMAL, Palworld, World of Tanks: HEAT, and Crimson Desert. After a demo session ends, players are presented with a call-to-action linking to the game listing on Steam, a popular PC gaming marketplace where they can purchase the full title. Though it’s optional, 20–40% of players choose to visit the store page after their session. Compared to traditional ad placements, this represents a fundamental shift in how players engage with game discovery. A player who visits the Steam store after real gameplay isn’t impulse clicking; they’ve already felt what the game is like and are now making an informed decision about whether to buy.

Conclusion

Instant Play Demos are still in an early exploratory phase; providing a solution powered by Amazon GameLift Streams that started as a question and is now producing impactful results.

We’ve learned that when you minimize the barrier between a curious player and a game they’re interested in exploring, something shifts. Players stop browsing and start pursuing, because real gameplay creates real intent.

Twitch is the first site to bring this experience to life, but the opportunity is expanding. Plans are in place to extend Instant Play Demos to other parts of the Amazon business in the future, expanding the ways developers can connect with new and existing players.
