The 2023 IMAGINE: Nonprofit conference brought together hundreds of nonprofit leaders, technologists, and innovators to learn and share how AWS Cloud technology can drive a positive impact for people and the planet. In 2022, Amazon Web Services (AWS) launched the Amazon Sustainability Data Initiative (ASDI) Global Hackathon, part of a new collaboration with the International Research Centre in Artificial Intelligence, under the auspices of UNESCO. Participants were asked to use their creativity, intelligence, and technical skills to build sustainability solutions using data from ASDI on any AWS Cloud services to build solutions that support one or more of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) from the United Nations (UN). We connected with Jeff McWhirter, the first place winner, to learn more about his winning project, the Repository for Archiving and MAnaging Diverse Data (RAMADDA).

Today at the IMAGINE: Nonprofit conference, AWS launched the 2023 AWS IMAGINE Grant cycle. Each year, the grant program provides a holistic package of resources, including unrestricted funding, to nonprofit organizations pursuing cloud technology projects for mission impact. Through the IMAGINE Grant, AWS discovers nonprofits that are bringing high-impact technology projects to life. At AWS, many public sector customers operate fleets of vehicles (e.g. emergency response, public transportation) that generate location data, which is ultimately stored in a data lake. These customers frequently ask how they can quickly visualize this data and extract insights that can help them optimize how they operate their vehicle fleets. In this post, learn how to use Amazon Athena and Amazon Location Service to perform ad hoc reverse geocoding on a notional dataset of vehicle location history, and visualize the results on an Amazon QuickSight map.

In 2020, the City of Canton, Ohio set out to build a better, safer, and more connected community. The city worked with government technology (GovTech) company Wi-Fiber, a network infrastructure provider using AWS Direct Connect. Wi-Fiber combined the City of Canton’s wireless hardware, existing copper, and fiber, where available, to connect hundreds of installed devices alongside roadways, intersections, and buildings. In two years, Canton successfully intertwined its legacy infrastructure with Wi-Fiber’s technology to maximize efficacy and minimize cost.

Today, AWS announced the addition of new nonprofit solutions in the AWS Solutions Library and AWS Marketplace. These solutions are tailored to the unique requirements of credit unions and nonprofit research organizations. They range from architectural guidance to ready-to-deploy solutions, and also include offerings developed by AWS Partners. Today, AWS announced the 11 participants chosen for the AWS Healthcare Accelerator Australia/New Zealand for Aged Care and Digital Health. The cohort is developing a range of solutions, using the power of the cloud, to improve equitable access to health, social, and aged care services; support aged care and health service providers to deliver higher quality care; and promote new and productive ways of delivering services.

In 2022, the Philadelphia Industrial Development Corporation (PIDC) initiated a pilot project to analyze traffic patterns and provide analytics within the Philadelphia Navy Yard. PIDC employed Rekor Systems, Inc. (Rekor) to bring this pilot project to fruition. Rekor is a global artificial intelligence (AI) technology company and an AWS Public Sector Partner with a mission to provide insights that build safer, smarter, and more efficient cities worldwide through intelligent infrastructure.
