Swinburne and AWS collaborate on Data for Social Good Cloud Innovation Centre

At the AWS Sydney Summit, Swinburne University of Technology announced the launch of the Data for Social Good Cloud Innovation Centre (CIC) powered by Amazon Web Services (AWS). The new centre is the first of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere and will leverage the expertise of Swinburne’s research institutes, which specialize in health, social innovation, and smart cities.

Through the CIC, Swinburne aspires to develop intelligent data-driven digital health programs and mobile solutions for the management of chronic diseases such as diabetes in collaboration with their Health Innovation Research Institute. This would incorporate tailored, real-time advice and support to individuals around lifestyle factors, such as diet and exercise, and provide guidance on medication. These solutions would reduce the burden on patients and service providers and provide efficient therapeutic decision-making at a reduced cost, particularly for elderly members of the community living in rural and remote areas.

The CIC also intends to work with Swinburne’s Social Innovation Research Institute, which is helping the community, social, and government sectors to prepare for the challenges emerging from increased digitization and automation.

“Swinburne is excited to work with AWS on this ambitious venture and leverage the capabilities of our Data Science Research Institute to develop digital solutions, products, and services that will be made publicly available to benefit Australians,” says Professor Aleksandar Subic, Swinburne’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research and Development.

The CIC will be located in Swinburne’s Innovation Precinct at its Hawthorn campus in Melbourne. It connects the university’s research and innovation capabilities, and is a place for staff and students to collaborate with industry, solve innovation challenges, and produce commercial outcomes.

The Swinburne Data for Social Good CIC is the latest addition to a global network of centres powered by AWS that share the company’s expertise and the solutions to the innovation challenges that address the public sector digital revolution globally. The CIC joins other initiatives worldwide including the California Polytechnic University Digital Transformation Hub; the Busan City CIC in Busan, South Korea; Sciences Po Public Innovation Lab in Paris, France; the Arizona State University Smart City CIC, and the recently launched Munich University of Applied Sciences (MUAS) Digital Transformation Lab and CODE University of Applied Sciences Better Future Lab in Berlin, Germany.
