Overview
Learning isn’t just key to personal development, it’s critical to business growth. Learning management system (LMS) provider Docebo brings these two sides together, helping businesses deliver customized training in the right formats and at the right times to empower their employees.
Continued advancement is fundamental to Docebo’s own business journey too. In 2012, customer demand for their learning platform outpaced the software company’s on-premises infrastructure. Facing inefficiencies and stunted growth, Docebo’s leaders knew that moving to a software-as-a-service (SaaS) model could be the key to greater scalability, performance, and security as they grew. But leaving behind traditional deployment models had its own learning curve.
As Fabio Pirovano, Co-founder and Chief Product Officer at Docebo, explains, “Moving to SaaS is not just a lift and shift. You need to understand how you can leverage the cloud.” Eugenio Pombi, Architect and Platform Director at Docebo, adds, “Working with AWS helped us overcome inherent challenges and gain the freedom to focus on innovation and growth.”
Unleashing a scalable learning platform with AWS
Docebo knew that SaaS presented a significant paradigm shift and needed a cloud service provider to work closely with their teams to instill the right cultural mindset, so they turned to Amazon Web Services (AWS). One of the biggest changes was how they managed their architecture. Andrea Spoldi, Cloud Architect at Docebo, says, “We had to re-evaluate and re-learn how to optimize our system for not just one customer, but many customers, all with different needs across different time zones.”
With the help of AWS, Docebo accessed best practices and support to optimize their new platform and reap the benefits of SaaS. Previously, the team had to perform updates, fixes, and new features manually. Now, Docebo makes changes across their entire customer base with a single deployment, reducing technical workloads. Using AWS Managed Services, Docebo delegates their infrastructure, compliance, and security workloads to AWS—meaning they can devote more focus to product innovation.
The building blocks for growth
While Docebo began with a handful of AWS services, today they’re using over 100. Pirovano explains why, “We really saw the value of being able to innovate and get to market faster.” The simplicity of implementing new AWS services, Spoldi adds, makes innovations even more intuitive, “From computing to content delivery, object storage, and databases—it can all be spun up in a single click.”
Using Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3), Docebo stores and distributes terabytes of e-learning content globally, while reducing management workload. With Amazon Aurora, they can scale their solution to millions of learners, while the automated provisioning of Amazon Relational Database Service delivers high availability. With these services and the global presence of AWS, Docebo can efficiently enter new regions.
Today, Docebo’s collaboration with AWS is going from strength to strength, “They really feel like more of an extension of our team than a provider,” says Pombi. By maximizing their SaaS platform and freeing up internal resources, Docebo does what they do best: develop state-of-the-art solutions for their customers.
From “new kid on the block” to market leader
The transition to SaaS created a solid foundation for growth and innovation. In 2012, Docebo had 200 customers and a headcount of under 20. “We were the new kids on the block and not well known in the global market,” explains Spoldi. Today, they are a market leader with almost 1,000 employees, 4,000 customers, and 30M learners globally.
Docebo’s customers aren’t just learning—they’re transforming their businesses. By making learning more efficient and effective, they have seen:
- 20 percent decrease in training costs
- Increased compliance completion by 10 percent
- Automation has reduced administrative costs by 80 percent
- 45 percent boost in learning revenue
For Pirovano, this is testament to a strong partnership, “Working with AWS really helped us grow as a company. Now we have a partner for all our needs.” As AWS develops new technologies, Docebo keeps innovating.“When AWS comes up with a new service, that's a trigger to evolve our platform and our product,” explains Spoldi.
Championing continuous innovation for learners
Moving forward, Docebo is exploring new ways to better serve customers with generative AI. “We can use Amazon Bedrock to quickly adopt new artificial intelligence (AI) technologies without the complexity of managing it,” says Pirovano.
Having already created e-learning materials in various formats—including virtual role plays—they are now improving knowledge retention by using a more personalized and intuitive method. Pirovano says “It’s the future of learning. We really believe that generative AI can change how [learning] courses are delivered.” According to Pombi, working with AWS has been key: “They continue to provide new technologies in easy-to-consume ways, enabling us to experiment, combine them, and build better products for our customers.
Over a decade into their SaaS journey, Docebo’s desire to innovate for their customers hasn’t changed. With the continued support of AWS, they’re well-placed to keep pushing boundaries and re-imagine the future of learning.
