Overview

India-based ride-hailing service BluSmart is on a mission. It aims to steer the subcontinent towards a sustainable means of transport by advancing the electrification of ride hailing in the country. With transport being one of the fastest-growing sources of carbon emissions in rapidly urbanizing India, increasing electric vehicle adoption will help the country meet its net-zero goals by 2070.

Founded in 2019, BluSmart is committed to building a holistic and comprehensive electric on-demand mobility service. The company currently operates a fleet of 4,000+ electric vehicles (EVs) that uses renewable energy to provide sustainable mobility solutions and reduce carbon emissions.

BluSmart offers zero surge pricing and zero ride cancelations to its customers, while committing to producing zero emissions. Since 2021, the start-up has built a loyal customer base that has been achieving a month-on-month growth of 15–20 percent.

By working together with Amazon Web Services (AWS), the company has built a technology backend that takes a full-stack approach to ride-matching at scale. As a result, BluSmart can optimize its EV fleet, and quickly and reliably scale up operations to meet demand. This allows BluSmart to drive greater adoption for EV ride services, ultimately reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable transport in India.

Opportunity | Driving EV Adoption to Realize India’s Sustainability Vision

BluSmart plans to expand its electric mobility services beyond Delhi NCR and Bangalore into other Indian cities, creating a sustainable transportation ecosystem. The company is targeting to have 100,000 EVs by 2025.

To do this, BluSmart needed a robust, scalable IT infrastructure for its application to ensure quick ride-matching and zero downtime for its users, especially during peak hours. Additionally, as a start-up, BluSmart needed to maximize its financial resources; they sought to use predictive analytics to boost both operational and energy efficiency.

Solution | Designing Great Customer Experiences with Data-Driven Decisions

Using Amazon Aurora, Amazon Redshift, and Amazon SageMaker, BluSmart developed a predictive analytics model that can forecast demand for its services in real time. The model provides information on peak demands, ensuring that enough drivers are routed to the right locations at the right time. For 97 percent of its trips, drivers have arrived at the pick-up point before or on-time.

BluSmart refined its pricing strategy for each ride with predictive analytics, guaranteeing a fair price and eliminating surge charges for its customers. This incentivizes customers to continue using EV services.

The company deployed AWS Auto Scaling to automatically adjust capacity during peak hours, for optimal application performance and availability. BluSmart’s services can then operate with 100 percent uptime, providing users with a reliable way to get around. BluSmart also runs Amazon CloudWatch to observe and monitor its resources and applications, allowing it to proactively detect and fix technical issues before they impact users.

Having built its infrastructure on AWS, BluSmart only needs to pay for the resources it uses, which has kept operational costs down.

Outcome | Responsibly Scaling toward Clean Mobility Solutions

As of August 2023, BluSmart has completed over 7.5 million all-electric trips, covering over 250 million kilometers and saving 18,000+ tonnes of CO2 emissions, which is equivalent to what 8.4 lacs+ mature trees absorb in a year.

By using the AWS Cloud, BluSmart aims to triple its fleet size, launch new routes, and use artificial intelligence to further improve its service. BluSmart will also tap on AWS’ advanced analytics and machine learning capabilities to support the company's growth plans and develop new features that improve customer experience. The objective is to change commuters' perception of EVs and catalyze its adoption, thus supporting India's net-zero ambitions.

"AWS is our trusted cloud provider for its feature-rich and highly performant ecosystem of diversified services.
