About Juspay
Founded in 2012, Juspay is a multinational payments technology company, redefining payments for over 500 top global enterprises, banks, and card schemes. It processes more than 175 million daily transactions globally, with an annualized total payment volume of $670 billion and a service reliability rate of 99.99%. Juspay’s comprehensive product suite—including orchestration, payouts, seamless authentication, tokenization, fraud management, end-to-end reconciliation, unified analytics, and more—helps businesses increase conversion rates, reduce fraud, optimize costs, and scale seamless customer experiences.
Opportunity | Handling Traffic Surges during Sales Events
Founded in 2012 with a single software development kit, Juspay has grown into one of India’s leading digital payment providers. Trusted by major online enterprises, it now processes over 175 million transactions daily through its payment orchestration and real-time payments stack.
Scalability is a critical aspect of Juspay’s architecture, just as reliability is paramount for merchants who trust Juspay to process payments. Ishan, head of business at Juspay, explains, “Our customers depend on us to balance scale with reliability, so even when there are bursts of traffic, our principle is that we should never, ever go down.”
Juspay has been using AWS since its inception, relying on the autoscaling capabilities of Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) to manage varying workload demands. While most customer workloads are predictable, major promotional events and seasonal campaigns can cause database traffic to spike up to 10 times. Provisioning for these peaks is costly, especially when resources sit idle during off-peak periods.
Solution | Adding a Shock-Absorbing Layer to Handle Traffic Bursts
Juspay prioritizes simplicity in its architecture, leveraging the cloud to abstract away infrastructure management. Jobin, product leader of infrastructure at Juspay, says, “We’ve learned a lot from the AWS Well-Architected framework, and that’s become our go-to reference whenever we approach a technical obstacle.”
To ease the load on its primary databases which run on Amazon Aurora, Juspay implemented Amazon ElastiCache as an in-memory data store. Amazon ElastiCache is a fully managed, Redis-compatible service that offers sub-millisecond latency for real-time applications at scale. “We were able to scale our storage layer within a few minutes using Amazon ElastiCache to handle surges in incoming traffic,” explains Jobin. “The quick failover of faulty cluster nodes helps reduce the impact of hardware failures on our service level agreements [SLAs].”
Juspay also created multiple Kubernetes clusters using Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (Amazon EKS), profiling its merchants based on the volume and characteristics of their web traffic. “Having multiple Kubernetes clusters helps us to stagger any infrastructure changes and manage cluster-level failovers in case of issues.”
To promote resiliency and availability, Juspay deployed its solution across multiple Regions and Availability Zones. “Seeing how quickly a failover happens between Amazon ElastiCache clusters across multiple Availability Zones reassures us that hardware failures won’t impact our SLAs,” Jobin adds.
Outcome | Balancing Reliability and Resilience with Elasticity
With these architectural changes, Juspay has successfully balanced reliability and resilience with efficient scalability. The company now maintains 99.99 percent infrastructure uptime, seamlessly handling traffic surges up to 10 times typical volumes—which can reach 50,000 transactions per second (TPS)—while ensuring high transaction success rates for merchants and banks. These improvements boosted average acceptance rates by up to 10 percent across all payment modes. Malav, head of product at Juspay, says, “Using AWS, we can dynamically scale resources as needed, empowering us to maintain reliability and optimize performance at any transaction volume.”
Moreover, with AWS Enterprise Support, Juspay continually optimizes its architecture for performance and cost. Over the last three years, transaction volumes have grown by 70–80 percent annually, while cost per transaction has decreased by 45–48 percent. By using Amazon ElastiCache and scaling on demand, Juspay ensures it only pays for resources when needed.
With a cell-based, active-active deployment, and a highly efficient infrastructure, Juspay is scaling its payment platform globally. “A strong cloud foundation helps us scale rapidly while maintaining near 100 percent availability,” says Malav. “With multi-Region capabilities, we can now deploy our flexible, modular software anywhere.”
Juspay has extended its offering to Singapore, other parts of Southeast Asia, and the Middle East, and has initiatives underway in Europe, UK, North America, and Latin America. Ishan concludes, “AWS has a massive presence. We’re applying their insights across different geographies to better understand what businesses really want and how the payment landscape operates across regions.”

Using AWS, we can dynamically scale resources as needed, empowering us to maintain reliability and optimize performance at any transaction volume.
