Karius Detects Infectious Diseases Faster Using AWS

“With Amazon Web Services as our cloud partner, we can scale to where science takes us and to when patients need us the most.”

– Sivan Bercovici, Chief Technology Officer, Karius

Using AWS, Karius uses genomics data and artificial intelligence to advance infectious disease diagnostics. By mapping a patient’s microbial landscape from a single, non-invasive blood draw, physicians can gain genomic insights to more quickly and accurately treat infectious diseases. The company relies on a host of AWS products to provide the compute infrastructure to analyze the genomic data from cell-free DNA sequencing. The Karius platform revolves around a data-intensive computational pipeline that utilizes hundreds of optimized Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) instances, running in a secured Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (Amazon VPC), processing tens to hundreds of millions of data points per patient. Karius continues to invest in technology innovation, with its data scientists gaining rapid access to de-identified data via Amazon Elastic File System (Amazon EFS), Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS), and Amazon Aurora, among others. Karius advanced machine learning algorithms allow for analysis of complex genomic data in real-time to support the organization's diagnostic efforts.
