The Uptime Institute estimated in 2022 that more than two thirds of IT and data center outages cost the businesses they effected over $100,000 on average. Being able to plan for and recover from downtime is a key factor for businesses to consider, as we all become more reliant on technology to live, work, and play.

In this post, we will discuss how the Veritas Alta Enterprise Resiliency offering provides businesses with a robust enterprise-ready solution to achieve resiliency and continuity. We’ll also discuss the Application Mobility Service (AMS), a new component of Veritas Alta Application Resiliency that can help accelerate and simplify customer migrations to Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Veritas Technologies is an AWS Partner and AWS Marketplace Seller with the AWS Storage Competency and 20+ years of experience helping customers with data protection, monitoring, archiving, virtualized storage, and resiliency use cases.

Application Resiliency at Scale

Veritas’ Alta Application Resiliency provides customers with a cloud-optimized, application-focused management tool for application resiliency on AWS. Focusing on availability and performance, it provides a low-latency, software-defined storage platform that’s designed to ensure maximum performance of workloads while also helping to control costs.

Customers are able to ensure resiliency for their applications by taking advantage of features like multi-Availability Zone (AZ) storage replication and cross-regional failover. These features, along with others, ensure customer applications are highly available and minimize the impact of disruptions and outages.

With the help of Veritas’ Application Mobility Service, customers can migrate applications to AWS even faster. AMS turns migrations of environments that have historically taken months into an automated three-step process which can often be completed within a single day.

Veritas Application Mobility Service

Veritas AMS helps customers mobilize their applications by intelligently deploying infrastructure in an automated manner, and configuring storage replication to keep multiple disparate environments in sync and/or prepare for migrations.

AMS does this by monitoring existing cluster infrastructure and recreating it on AWS as an exact replica of existing cluster resources. This can be thought of as creating a “cloud twin.”

Customers also have the ability to scale cloud resources to be larger or smaller than the on-premises infrastructure, to help with application rightsizing. Additionally, these new cloud resources are able to leverage cloud-native scaling technologies to adapt to changes in usage over time, and take advantage of AWS’s global footprint.

AMS can be beneficial for financial services, telecommunications, energy, pharmaceutical, and healthcare and life sciences companies looking to fast-track cloud migrations for critical applications. With support for gp2, gp3, io1, io2, and io2 Block Express SSD volumes, and st1 and sc1 HDD volumes, customers can leverage the full catalog of Amazon Elastic Block Storage (Amazon EBS) offerings to migrate mission-critical workloads into intelligently architected deployments on AWS.

How it Works

The Application Mobility Service is hosted by Veritas and provides the intelligence needed to discover existing InfoScale deployments, configure resources in AWS, and initiate replication to start migrating the data for you. This service works with on-premises deployments as well as clusters in AWS, and can configure and migrate applications to AWS with minimal effort.

Customers with active InfoScale subscriptions can visit appresiliency.veritas.com to access the AMS dashboard.

Customers can download a small gateway package and register it with the Application Mobility Service. AMS will then securely connect to the gateway, over an encrypted TLS connection, and collect configuration data which is stored directly inside AMS.

Inside the AMS portal, customers will then be able to select certain deployment options, such as the AWS Region(s) they want the application deployed to and the instance types for their deployment. Customers can also specify which AZ’s or Regions they want their application resources to be spread across, which will provide additional resiliency options for their application deployments in AWS.

Using the configuration data collected from the existing InfoScale cluster, and the customer configured deployment options, AMS will create deployment templates to automatically build out the cloud twin. AMS will also deploy and configure Alta Application Resiliency on all AWS resources to keep the components in sync.

AWS Shared Responsibility for Resiliency

Alta Application Resiliency provides customers with a unified resiliency platform that helps customers align with the “Change Management and Operational Resilience,” “Observability and Failure Management,” and “Continuous Testing of Critical Infrastructure” aspects of the AWS Shared Responsibility Model for Resiliency.

In addition, AMS helps customers deploy their environment in a resilient architecture to help design the “Workload Architecture” for resiliency.

Conclusion

Veritas Application Mobility Service (AMS) is included with all active Veritas Alta Application Resiliency subscriptions, meaning customers can take advantage of this automated deployment method without additional costs. Veritas also provides a simplified license conversion process for customers with existing InfoScale licenses that are looking to migrating to AWS.
