Announcing the 2019 City on a Cloud Innovation Challenge finalists

The sixth annual City on a Cloud Innovation Challenge opened new categories to highlight innovative customers that are driving actionable change for the benefit of constituents. The competition includes categories for constituent services, solving persistent problems, sustainability and equity, powered by AWS, dream big, and public datasets. The competition received more than 100 nominee use cases that highlighted how AWS customers are using the cloud to innovate and improve the lives of constituents. Read more.

AWS helps researchers study “messages” from the universe

Researchers at the IceCube Experiment and University of California, San Diego just completed the largest cloud simulation in history using 51,500 cloud GPUs including Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) On-Demand and Spot Instances to understand messages from the universe. The IceCube experiment searches for ghost-like massless particles called neutrinos deep within the ice at the South Pole using a unique buried cubic kilometer-size telescope consisting of 5,160 optical sensors. Digital Earth Africa: Enabling insights for better decision-making

As part of the Amazon Sustainability Data Initiative, AWS is supporting Digital Earth Africa (DE Africa). DE Africa is enabling African nations to track changes across the continent in unprecedented detail by making Earth observation data more easily accessible. This will provide valuable insights for better decision-making around prevention and planning in areas including flooding, droughts, soil and coastal erosion, agriculture, forest-cover, land use and land cover change, water availability and quality, and changes to human settlements. Fresno State builds an autonomous Bulldog Bot with AWS RoboMaker

During Homecoming 2019, the Fresno State Hub of Digital Transformation showcased the Bulldog Bot – a robotic take on the school mascot – built with AWS RoboMaker and AWS artificial intelligence services. The interactive Bulldog Bot engaged fans across campus by telling jokes, playing karaoke, and answering Fresno State homecoming trivia questions. Read more.

Teaching the next generation of cloud professionals during the Hour of Code

The Hour of Code is coming! Amazon Future Engineer, Amazon Web Services, and AWS Educate are supporting Amazonians across the globe as they inspire kids to try computer science through Code.org’s Hour of Code – both powered by AWS. The Hour of Code takes place during Computer Science Education Week, December 9 to 15. Read more.
