At the first Amazon Web Services (AWS) Public Sector Summit in New Delhi, India more than 1,000 technologists gathered to learn about digital transformation through cloud technologies, get inspired, dive deep, and begin to build. AWS customers highlighted the groundbreaking work done in India through technology to improve the lives of the more than one billion Indian citizens. Amazon Web Services (AWS) and a consortium of Bay Area community colleges along with their K12 and California State University partners, launched a regional initiative to prepare students for jobs in one of the fastest-growing, and highest-paying, areas in the technology field: cloud computing. The schools include City College of San Francisco, Canada College, De Anza College, Evergreen Valley College, Foothill College, Las Positas College, College of San Mateo, Mission College, SIATech High Schools and Skyline College.

The World Bank, in collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS), and the Abdulla Al Ghurair Foundation for Education (AGFE), hosted the Skills for The Future Initiative (SFI) at Zayed University in Dubai on June 19th and 20th. The program introduced the next generation of technology leaders in the United Arab Emirates to the skills needed to prepare them for the jobs of the future. The two-day training bootcamp attracted students from 12 institutes who learned about the changing nature of work and received introductory training on cloud technology leveraging AWS Educate resources.

Building off of momentum on AWS Educate’s Cloud Degree initiative from last year, including the launch of the 19-school California Cloud offering and the cloud degree launched last year with Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA), AWS Educate has been working around the world to bring cloud opportunities to students from the US to the UK.

Leaders at all levels of government are continuing to think big about how they can leverage technology to modernize citizen services and better deliver on mission. Cloud is playing a foundational role in enabling this innovation. Teresa Carlson, Vice President of Worldwide Public Sector at Amazon Web Services (AWS), led a fireside chat with Andrew Hallman, Deputy Director of Digital Innovation at the CIA, at FedTalks 2019. In the conversation, Andrew covered the need for agile adoption of the latest technologies within the CIA to compete more effectively in an increasingly complex threat landscape, the intersection of innovation and security, and CIA’s commitment to strengthening its digital acumen.

George Mason University (Mason) and Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA), in collaboration with AWS Educate, announced a Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) pathway in cloud computing. This degree offers students a seamless transfer pathway from a two-year associate degree to a four-year bachelor degree in the cloud, providing a clear path to high-demand careers in cloud computing at AWS partners and customers.

Governments face stiff competition with the private sector when it comes to recruiting civil servants with digital skills. As they look to innovate and make their services more citizen-centric, government leaders can benefit from bold strategies to recruit diverse, digitally savvy talent. Dr. Wendy Cukier, Director of the Diversity Institute at Ryerson University, explores the challenges facing the Canadian public service and recommendations to develop the federal workforce, in a new paper produced in collaboration with Public Policy Forum and the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Institute. While the paper focuses on Canada, the strategies offered are relevant to leaders around the world.

This year, we have seen many new updates to AWS Educate from new badges to new relationships, all with the common mission of building skills for the future worldwide. With over 1,500 institutions and hundreds of thousands of students who use AWS Educate, we wanted to take you on a trip around the world and highlight how students are learning and innovating with the cloud.

The National Trade Union Congress (NTUC) Learning Hub (LHUB) will deliver courses, powered by AWS Educate, to train and reskill 20,000 Singaporeans before the end of 2019 as part of their workforce development program. LHUB will use the content and expertise provided by AWS Educate, a global program that provides a robust set of learning resources and AWS Promotional Credits for trainees and trainers to acquire the latest cloud computing skills. Trainers and learning institutions can incorporate cutting-edge cloud technology, open source content into their teaching curriculum, and provide students with hands-on experience using AWS Promotional Credits.

Technology adoption is a driver of inclusive growth. It helps people upskill and firms become more productive. As more organizations embrace digital transformation, it is often the result of deliberate choices. This starts with investing in current and future workers and businesses to prepare them to go digital, as the World Bank finds in its report about the relationship between technology adoption and equality of opportunity in the European Union.
