Ushering in a new era of innovation in Greece – AWS office launches in Athens

Athens Greece at sunset

When speaking about Greece, people normally start by talking about its scientists and philosophers from antiquity. But during my visits to Athens last year, I was impressed by how the city nurtures its innovators and reinvents itself thanks to technology, placing Greece at the forefront of the digital economy. With this in mind, Amazon Web Services (AWS) is announcing the opening of an office in Athens, furthering our commitment to investing in Greece and responding to the expanding customer base in the country.

The office will support organisations of all sizes—startups, enterprises, and public sector agencies—as they make the transition to the cloud. Teams of AWS account managers, partner managers, solutions architects, and many other functions are already supporting Greek customers to run everything from development and test environments to big data analytics, mobile, web, social, enterprise business applications, Internet of Things (IoT), and mission-critical workloads.

The opening of the office is our latest investment in Greece. For many years, we’ve had a strong, dedicated, and growing community of customers in Greece using AWS technologies to innovate for the benefit of the citizens of the country. In January 2020, we launched an Edge location in Athens, bringing advanced technologies such as Amazon CloudFront, Lambda@Edge, AWS Shield, and AWS WAF to the country and connecting Greece to AWS global infrastructure network, improving the secure delivery of content to customers in Greece by over 50 percent.

In February 2020, together with Kyriakos Pierrakakis, Minister of State and Digital Governance, we signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which utilizes cloud computing technologies to foster innovation in Greece. The MoU introduced a number of programs to the country to encourage innovation across the economy. By cooperating in the areas of digital governance, digital infrastructure, and cloud skills education, this MoU provided the foundation on which Minister Pierrakakis and his colleagues are building a modern and digital Greece, powered by cloud computing.

AWS is committed to supporting Greece in driving new services to better serve citizens and customers, nurture the Greek startup community and train the cloud architects of the future.
