About Com2uS Platform
Com2uS Platform, a subsidiary of Com2uS Holdings, manages the game infrastructure for Com2uS Group and offers Hive, an all-in-one platform tailored for global game services. Built on over 20 years of industry experience and success, Hive is a live operations platform that helps developers and publishers streamline operations and accelerate global market entry. Hive supports efficient game management with a streamlined SDK and an integrated management console, while offering powerful analytics tools and real-time insights to maximize growth. Backed by Com2uS Group’s global network and partnerships with over 20 publishers, Hive also provides tailored strategic support to help game companies achieve success worldwide.
Opportunity | Overcoming Limitations of Legacy Infrastructure
Com2uS Platform offers Hive, a game-backend-as-a-service (GBaaS) platform designed to handle tasks beyond game development, such as authentication, payments, and service metrics analysis, through a streamlined software development kit (SDK). This gives developers the freedom to focus entirely on creating content. Currently, over 200 games from 65 domestic and international game studios are powered by Hive.
Hive operated in a hybrid cloud environment by combining a physical server–based infrastructure in an internet data center with VMware-based private cloud infrastructure. However, this setup presented challenges, including high upfront costs for replacing aging hardware and the ongoing burden of maintenance. Additionally, the unpredictable nature of traffic spikes required a scalable solution capable of rapid response to sudden changes. The platform also needed risk mitigation for hardware maintenance in single-region deployments and a strategy to strengthen its global competitiveness.
Solution | Ensuring Seamless Migration to AWS
Com2uS Platform chose to migrate to the cloud during a planned server upgrade, recognizing the reliability of AWS as the ideal choice to support Hive's global customer base. Once the decision to move to AWS was made, it developed a comprehensive migration plan covering migration strategy, resource management policies, and data transfer processes. Given the need to migrate most systems to ensure the stable operation of Hive and the limited team size, it opted for a "lift-and-shift" approach to replicate the existing infrastructure environment as closely as possible for a swift transition.
Given the interconnected nature of the platform's many system modules, migrating all systems at once was not feasible. To ensure a smooth and uninterrupted transition, Com2uS Platform opted for a sequential migration of each service, minimizing any potential impact on Hive's operations.
It utilized AWS Direct Connect to establish direct communication between the on-premises environment and AWS, enabling the migration work to proceed without disrupting ongoing services. Over approximately eight months, Com2uS Platform successfully completed the first phase of Hive migration. To handle the vast volume of events and logs generated across multiple Hive accounts, the team also implemented an integrated logging system using Elastic Load Balancing, Amazon CloudWatch, AWS CloudTrail, and Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3). This setup supported efficient management and monitoring of platform activity.
Outcome | Enhancing Scalability and Expanding Global Reach
By migrating Hive to AWS, Com2uS Platform eliminated the high costs of replacing aging hardware in its data center, freed its limited team from the increasing maintenance demands, and lowered overall operating costs by 26 percent. This migration also eliminated dependency on idle physical resources, enabling over 50 percent faster scalability of resources to handle traffic surges and large-scale promotions. Additionally, by transitioning from a single-region operation to a multi-region setup, the platform's service reliability improved, reducing disaster recovery time by 50 percent and ensuring uninterrupted service even in the event of a regional outage.
Jongmoon Kim, chief platform business officer at Com2uS Platform, states, "Our goal is to transform Hive into a gateway for developers and publishers to access larger markets, beyond the GBaaS space. To achieve this, global expansion through cloud adoption was essential, and AWS stood out as the most reliable cloud service provider in terms of global stability and service continuity. Additionally, the ability to take advantage of the extensive AWS Partner Network was a key decision factor in our business expansion plans."
Com2uS Platform has successfully listed Hive on AWS Marketplace and earned certification under the AWS ISV Accelerate Program. With these advancements, the company plans to further accelerate the global expansion of Hive through a go-to-market collaboration with AWS.
