Otto Opens Doors to Further Growth in the Cloud

2018

Otto Group is one of the world’s largest online retailers. It operates 30 major companies across the globe, employing 52,000 people and generating €14.3 billion in revenue in 2019/20. One of its brands—Otto—is a 60-year-old mail order business that now takes 90 percent of its orders online, totaling €5.3 billion a year from half a billion visits. Managing an ecommerce company of this size is only possible because of Otto’s scalable architecture, which it migrated to Amazon Web Services (AWS) in 2017. The architecture comprises around 160 microservices running in 3,000 containers and is maintained by 25 autonomous development teams. In this video, Daniel Barthelmes, head of platform operations at otto.de talks about his teams’ journey to AWS. He also shares tips for a successful migration, covering everything from analysis and preparation to team autonomy.
