Xebia helps Paebbl support sustainability mission with scalable, AI-ready platform on AWS
Learn how Paebbl accelerated sustainability innovation by building a scalable AWS data and AI platform with Xebia.
Benefits
Overview
Paebbl needed to build a scalable, AI-ready data platform to support its sustainability mission. The company implemented a comprehensive Amazon Web Services (AWS) advanced data and AI services platform with help from AWS Premier Partner Xebia. Using this solution, Paebbl has reduced development time from weeks to hours, democratized data access to enable faster insights, and achieved 100% faster edge-to-cloud data processing. This has allowed them to avoid $250,000 in spending while delivering measurable results impacting sustainability.
About Paebbl
Paebbl is a mission-driven organization focused on combating global warming at unprecedented scale. The company believes the immense volumes of greenhouse gases humanity needs to find a home for are a huge opportunity – CO2 can be a literal building block for society.
Opportunity | Scaling to support sustainable solutions
Paebbl, headquartered in Rotterdam, is a climate-tech startup focused on turning captured CO₂ into sustainable cement-like materials. Its mission is to combat global warming by scaling carbon utilization technologies.
IoT sensors on reactors generate continuous streams of temperature, pressure, and emissions data. Managing, transforming, and sharing this data across teams was challenging for Paebbl, which relied on manual processes and took weeks to deploy new services. “We knew we were going to generate massive amounts of data from our reactors and IoT devices. To scale effectively, we needed solid foundations—without hiring dozens of platform engineers to do undifferentiated heavy lifting,” says David Pugh, VP Systems & Architecture, Paebbl.
A lean startup, Paebbl lacked dedicated security engineers, which was a challenge because the company needed strong guardrails to ensure compliance and data protection. Paebbl also struggled with cost constraints, as its on-premises infrastructure would have required significant upfront investment. As a climate-tech company, Paebbl also required cloud solutions that aligned with its mission of reducing environmental impact.
About AWS Partner Xebia
Xebia, based in the Netherlands, is a global consultancy with 25 years of software craftsmanship at its foundation. The company helps organizations maximize the potential of data and AI, cloud, automation, and software product innovation by combining industry expertise with an outcome-driven mindset.
Solution | Working with Xebia to implement an integrated AWS solution
Paebbl turned to Xebia, an AWS Partner, for help. Xebia initially helped Paebbl understand how it could benefit from the AWS Migration Acceleration Program (MAP), and then recommended specific AWS technologies. “We always want to thoroughly understand customer goals. With Paebbl, it was clear they needed a platform that could scale rapidly, integrate AI seamlessly, and deliver sustainability insights. AWS was the right fit,” says Ronnie Bagan, Vice President of Global Alliances, AWS at Xebia. “We led some workshops with our data team to understand exactly what Paebbl’s requirements were and what they wanted to do with IoT data. From there, we put the strategy and architecture in place.”
Collaborating with AWS and Paebbl, Xebia designed and deployed a comprehensive solution, including a secure, well-architected AWS Landing Zone architecture to enable rapid deployment. Xebia also helped Paebbl deploy AWS IoT Greengrass for edge processing of IoT sensor data, and Amazon SageMaker Unified Studio, which provides access to all data and tools for analytics and AI in one environment. “Amazon SageMaker Unified Studio was very new at that time, and, as an AWS Partner, we had good access
to AWS product teams so we could confidently present the technology to Paebbl,” says Hima Jayaprakash, AWS Cloud Architect at Xebia.
Amazon Kinesis manages real-time ingestion of IoT data from reactors, and all emissions data is stored in an Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3)-based data lake.
In addition, Paebbl teams use AWS Glue for cataloging and ETL, and AWS Lambda for data pipeline transformation. Paebbl uses Amazon Quick Sight and Amazon Quick Suite to enable natural language queries and make insights accessible to non-technical stakeholders. Xebia also provides FinOps, GreenOps, and Platform Managed Services to Paebbl.
Outcome | Speeding time to market and democratizing access to IoT data
Using its new integrated AWS solution, Paebbl has faster edge-to-cloud workflows, improving time to market for development from two weeks to hours. “Last week I went from idea to deployed service in production in about two hours. That’s transformative,” Pugh says. Data access is also easier on AWS, and data that previously took days or
weeks to process is now available in minutes. Mohan Subburaj, a Cloud Engineer at Xebia, explains: “The biggest breakthrough was enabling Paebbl’s data scientists—
not just engineers—to access and analyze IoT data in one place through Amazon SageMaker Unified Studio. It democratized data access across the organization.”
Paebbl is also seeing significant cost savings, avoiding a sizable on-premise infrastructure spend while reducing the need for large platform engineering teams.
Data governance and security has also improved, with centralized guardrails ensuring compliance without slowing innovation. “I can sleep at night knowing services are
secure and aligned with our governance model—even without a CSO,” says Pugh.
Sustainability has also improved for Paebbl, with the cloud-native design reducing the environmental footprint compared to on-premises compute and real-time dashboards tracking carbon reduction and energy efficiency. “For Paebbl, sustainability isn’t just a goal—it’s the business. The efficiency and reporting tools they’re seeing with AWS align perfectly with that mission,” says Hima Jayaprakash, Cloud Security Architect at Xebia.
Both AWS and Xebia want us to be successful. Together, they’ve enabled us to move faster, scale smarter, and stay true to our mission of fighting climate change.
