Rumah Siap Kerja Pivots to a Cloud-based E-Learning Platform in 2 Months on AWS

Overview

Rumah Siap Kerja (RSK) is an Indonesia-based education technology startup that provides professional and entrepreneurship training, and career coaching services. Founded in 2019, RSK was established wholly offline with face-to-face trainings, working with more than 50 trainers across a range of skill sets, expertise, and industries.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Indonesia experienced its highest level of unemployment in nearly a decade, and demand for online professional training surged. RSK realized it needed to pivot its business and build an e-learning platform to deliver its courses and programs.

RSK turned to the cloud to flexibly adapt to changing pandemic conditions without overcommitting budgets. It chose to work with Amazon Web Services (AWS) as the organization already had a good experience hosting its website on the AWS Cloud. In 2020, RSK began working with Elitery, an Amazon Web Services (AWS) Advanced Tier Services Partner, to set up its e-learning platform on the AWS Cloud. 

RSK was able to design, build, and deploy a full-fledged Learning Management System (LMS) in just 2 months. RSK was able to successfully grow its user base by up to 300 percent within a year, and deliver more than 3,700,000 hours of training to at least 500,000 users. As of 2022, RSK has over 1,496 courses on the platform, with 2,000 training videos equivalent to a total of over 3,700,000 viewing hours.

Founded in 2019, RSK was established wholly offline with face-to-face trainings, working with more than 50 trainers across a range of skill sets, expertise, and industries.

Supporting RSK’s Pivot to Cloud-based Training

With its LMS in the cloud, RSK could utilize pre-recorded videos and video conferencing apps to train its members virtually. The new LMS features built-in assessment tools, which gives RSK’s trainers and users a comprehensive view of the entire learning journey. RSK also uses the LMS to centrally manage training, tracking students, and reporting analytics, saving them up to 10 hours/week on administrative tasks.

RSK deployed its LMS on Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) and Amazon EC2 Auto Scaling to grow or shrink compute capacity depending on demand. While the platform handles about 500 concurrent users on average, it can sometimes reach as many as 20,000 concurrent users. With a scalable cloud-based infrastructure, RSK can deliver consistent, high-quality training video content, even during traffic spikes.

RSK runs Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) to automate time-consuming administration tasks, such as hardware provisioning, patching, and backups. This means RSK’s IT team now spends less time on infrastructure maintenance and can redirect its focus to developing new products and improving features.

These include RSK’s mobile app, which was launched in 2022. The app complements its online LMS, allowing users to attend training sessions on the go, or to seek career coaching services. In 2022, RSK also introduced an entrepreneurship training course via its mobile app that helps aspiring entrepreneurs start their own businesses.

Achieving Cost Reductions and Improved Customer Service

In 2021, on AWS’s recommendation, RSK integrated Amazon CloudFront with Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) to deliver its video content. Built for high performance and security, the content delivery network service has helped RSK halve data transfer charges.

RSK also uses Amazon Simple Email Service (Amazon SES) to support its user registration process and marketing campaigns. Previously, the system was unable to process more than 5,000 registrations/day, leading to user validation errors during registration. Using Amazon SES, RSK can quickly scale and has not encountered issues with validation errors since. 

Going Serverless to Improve End-User Experience

Looking ahead, RSK plans to adopt Amazon Aurora to power its performance-intensive applications in a serverless, fully managed database environment. This hands-off approach to capacity management will allow RSK to focus on expanding its suite of products and features, thus creating a more engaging and comprehensive learning experience for its users.
