Volkswagen Works with AWS to Build Industrial Cloud

2019

Volkswagen Group includes twelve iconic automotive brands, such as Volkswagen, Audi, and Porsche, and offers a portfolio of more than 350 different car models. The Group manufactures some 11 million cars per year and brings 200 million parts per day into its factories—a massive scale at which to operate an effective global supply chain. Volkswagen is working with AWS to move its 124 factory sites to a single architecture: the Volkswagen Industrial Cloud.

As a next step, the Group aims to integrate Volkswagen’s global supplier network into the Industrial Cloud. The Industrial Cloud takes transformation beyond automation and consists of three parts: the Digital Production Platform, targeting all Group plants and built on AWS; a Volkswagen Group App Store, with use case applications available for all partners; and the company’s machines and equipment on the shop floor.

The company uses AWS machine learning services–running algorithms using information gathered from sensors on the shop floor–and AWS Outposts.
