A research team led by Dr. Beatriz Martinez Lopez at UC Davis supports pig farmers with a data analytics platform that aggregates and analyzes animal health data to diagnose animal viruses and diseases. But this platform was primarily designed for analysts and data scientists. To truly transform animal disease management, Martinez-Lopez wants to put this data analytics tool into the hands of farmers around the world. So the research team is using the scalable, cost-effective tools of the AWS Cloud, along with a research grant letter of support from AWS, to make this optimized platform a reality.

The extensive higher education landscape in India poses many challenges, like the rising complexity of administrative and academic activities, increase in student enrollment from a tech-savvy generation, data security issues, and more. The education technology (EdTech) company CollPoll is a full-stack web- and mobile-based campus automation, digital learning, and analytics platform designed to address these challenges with artificial intelligence powered by Amazon Web Services (AWS). CollPoll uses the cloud to provide end-to-end automation of key academic and administrative processes to bring digital transformation solutions to educational institutions in India and around the world.

How do we avoid the next global pandemic? For researchers collaborating with the University of British Columbia Cloud Innovation Center (UBC CIC), the answer to that question lies in a massive library of genetic sequencing data. But there is a problem: the data library is so massive that traditional computing can’t comprehensively analyze or process it. So the UBC CIC team collaborated with computational virologists to create Serratus, an open-science viral discovery platform to transform the field of genomics—built on the massive computational power of the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Cloud.

The Delhi Academy of Medical Sciences Pvt Ltd (DAMS) is the leading institute for National Eligibility and Entrance Test postgraduate (NEET PG) preparation for doctors in India. During the pandemic, DAMS shifted its course delivery to its eMedicoz app, an education technology (EdTech) initiative powered by AWS that has reached more than 500,000 verified doctors and medical student subscribers. To keep students connected with real-time learning, DAMS used AWS to deliver live-streamed and two-way interactive classes for thousands of budding doctors through the eMedicoz app.

In Africa, scientific data is critical to helping the nation’s leaders tackle issues like water scarcity and climate change. A collaboration between nonprofit Digital Earth Africa (DE Africa) and the Amazon Sustainability Data Initiative (ASDI) is helping them access the data they need. DE Africa operates a free and user-friendly Earth observation (EO) data service that provides African policymakers with insights into a range of challenges, from natural resource management to the impacts of climate change. The service has already helped Ghanaian officials identify and tackle illegal mining, and provided decision-ready insights on flooding and drought in Tanzania and Nigeria.

The UC Davis Health Cloud Innovation Center (CIC) will focus on digital health equity and will use Amazon’s Working Backwards principles and methodologies to improve health outcomes and reduce health disparities. The CIC will allow clinicians or clinical care providers, patients, and developers to exchange ideas, as well as prototype and validate open-source solutions focused on making digital health more equitable and accessible worldwide. Among the 13 AWS CICs globally, this will be the first CIC based at an academic medical center.

The higher education we knew before the pandemic will not be the one that emerges post-pandemic. Leaders must meet this moment by redefining the constructs of higher education. The “Top 10 IT Issues, 2022: The Higher Education We Deserve” report released by EDUCAUSE groups the top 10 priorities into three imperatives: 1) shared vision, shared strategy; 2) student success as institutional success; and 3) sustainable business models.

Education technology (EdTech) company GoGuardian announces the availability of a Go Client library for Amazon Kinesis Data Streams via open source. Go is a widely used language among developers for streaming applications that was previously not available for Amazon Kinesis Data Streams (Amazon KDS).
