Celebrating 15 Years of AWS GovCloud (US): Built for the Nation’s Most Critical Missions

This August, AWS GovCloud (US) turns fifteen. It launched in 2011 as the first cloud purpose-built for U.S. government security and compliance. From initial design to present-day scale, we’ve taken a mission-centered approach to region development – working backwards from customer requirements to deliver capabilities that drive the most impactful outcomes and deliver tangible results at scale. Today, AWS GovCloud (US) is the operational backbone of some of the nation’s most critical applications spanning security and defense, energy, public health and financial services. Fifteen years in, and that mission focus still defines everything AWS GovCloud (US) delivers.
A First-of-Its-Kind Cloud for Government
When AWS GovCloud (US-West) launched on August 16, 2011, it solved a problem that had long kept government agencies from fully embracing the cloud: how to process and store sensitive data in a secure, compliant environment. The regions provide agencies a place to run their most sensitive data and workloads, including International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) controlled data, in a physically and logically isolated environment, operated exclusively by U.S. citizens on U.S. soil and today offering 24×7 U.S. citizen customer support. This approach removes the false choice between meeting the most rigorous compliance standards and innovating at speed. More than simply an end-goal or destination, compliance is the engine that makes speed and mission acceleration possible.
Powering Today’s Most Important Missions
From the earliest days, the most demanding workloads in government were platformed on AWS GovCloud (US).
- NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory processed data from the Mars Curiosity Rover on AWS GovCloud (US), proving the cloud could support interplanetary exploration. This April, AWS GovCloud (US) performed the compute for trajectory analysis of the Artemis II lunar fly-by. In the first 48 hours after launch, the system processed thousands of compute hours to retarget the trajectory in near real-time, while 25 million people watched live 4K video beamed from the Moon by laser and carried across the AWS network. We’re honored to support what comes next.
- The U.S. Census Bureau migrated 2020census.gov to AWS GovCloud (US) to run the first-ever online decennial census. The platform handled millions of simultaneous users, absorbing over seven million visits in a single day and four million on Census Day alone, and reached a 99.98 percent response rate. It saved an estimated $5.3 billion and eliminated the periodic downtime of past cycles. As the Census Bureau’s IT Service Management Office put it: “Going from multiple periods of downtime throughout the year to zero was by far the biggest benefit of the solution.” The Bureau continues to build on that foundation as it looks to 2030.
- The Department of Veterans Affairs launched Vets.gov on AWS GovCloud (US), the first workload approved at VA to run in production on any commercial cloud. Before it, Veterans had to navigate hundreds of disconnected VA websites with separate usernames and passwords. After it, they had one place to discover, apply for, track, and manage their benefits. Traffic grew past 1.5 million visits per month. That work became today’s VA.gov, the digital front door for millions of Veterans.
- The U.S. Navy migrated its SAP enterprise resource planning system to AWS GovCloud (US), bringing 72,000 users across six commands onto one secure platform 10 months ahead of schedule. The system tracks roughly $70 billion in parts and goods. Previously, maintenance backlogs kept ships pier-side for months because parts went missing inside a disconnected logistics enterprise. Now, sailors and logistics teams have the visibility to keep ships mission-ready and get back to sea faster.
- The Department of Housing and Urban Development digitized its paper-based mortgage insurance process on AWS GovCloud (US), launching the Federal Housing Administration Catalyst platform in just nine days when the pandemic shut down federal offices. The platform kept HUD’s $1.3 trillion mortgage insurance program running and cut claims processing from months to seconds. Federal offices were dark. The paper trail stopped. Nine days later, 1,100 lender companies were submitting claims electronically. In its first year, the platform processed 144,000 claims and 128,000 loan case binders without interruption.
- AT&T operates its Next Generation 9-1-1 platform on AWS GovCloud (US), enabling call centers nationwide to receive video, photos, and other multimedia during emergencies. A dispatcher can see live video of a fire and know what type of truck to send before it rolls. When hurricanes put 9-1-1 centers underwater, workers logged in remotely and kept answering calls. AT&T calls it a partnership that is helping to save lives.
- The West Virginia State Police runs its Internet Crimes Against Children Data System on AWS GovCloud (US), giving 11,000 investigators across all 50 states a shared platform for evidence and CyberTips. Distributing a tip once took a week by CD. Now it arrives in seconds. Investigators report that sexual assaults have been prevented because of the speed at which they can react to leads. The compliant environment keeps highly sensitive criminal justice data protected.
The results speak for themselves and over time, have demonstrated both the viability and transformative power of cloud for mission operations.
15 Years of Growth and Evolution
Over fifteen years, AWS GovCloud (US) has continuously expanded to deliver the security, operational excellence and innovation customers value most.
- Compliance that accelerates the mission. AWS GovCloud (US) achieved FedRAMP Class D (High) Certification and DoD Cloud Computing SRG Impact Level 4 and 5 provisional authorizations. That foundation extends to additional frameworks, including ITAR, CMMC (DFARS 252.204-7012), 10 CFR Part 810, CJIS Security Policy, and IRS 1075. For customers, this changes the question from “Can we use the cloud?” to “How fast can we move?” These authorizations let missions start sooner, with the hardest compliance questions already answered.
- Security and operational excellence by design. The region is administered entirely by U.S. citizen personnel and secured with FIPS 140-3 validated cryptography, offering proactive threat detection and remediation capabilities (Security Hub, Inspector, GuardDuty), as well as fully managed and authorized cross-domain solutions (AWS Diode) for multi-level security requirements. Landing Zone Accelerators and Zero Trust architectures help agencies stand up secure environments faster, providing guidance customers can build on with confidence and proven across fifteen years of running regulated cloud at scale.
- Infrastructure built for resiliency. In 2018 we launched AWS GovCloud (US-East), adding a second region with three additional Availability Zones; expanding resiliency capabilities for the nation’s most critical applications and enabling multi-region, active-active architectures.
- Capability and service expansion. AWS GovCloud (US) has evolved to harness every major shift in cloud computing, so customers never have to choose between compliance and modern architecture. From serverless capabilities including AWS Lambda, to containers with Amazon ECS and Amazon EKS; PaaS solutions like Amazon Connect for cloud contact centers and Amazon WorkSpaces for end-user computing; to AI and ML capabilities for the new GenAI era, AWS GovCloud (US) continues to offer an extensive variety of services that unlock innovation and provide the foundation for digital and mission transformation.

Much of that innovation is already live today. AWS GovCloud (US) gives customers freedom of model choice, with more than 20 leading models available through Amazon Bedrock and Amazon Bedrock AgentCore. Amazon Nova, Anthropic Claude, OpenAI GPT, NVIDIA Nemotron, xAI Grok and a growing catalog of open-weight models run inside the compliance boundary. Every model is authorized and mission-ready. Agencies pick the best one for the job. The results are already showing: real-time cyber threat detection. Document review that once took analysts weeks, done overnight. Accelerated drug safety evaluations. Production code written inside the compliance boundary. Development teams ship secure, compliant code at a pace that used to require twice the headcount. Kiro, an AI-powered development environment that turns natural-language requirements into production-ready code, makes it possible. Amazon Quick, an AI work assistant for research, summarization, and analysis, compresses hours of manual knowledge work into minutes. Employees get precious time back for higher-value decisions.
And we are investing to accomplish far more. Amazon announced an up to $50 billion AI and supercomputing infrastructure expansion for U.S. government agencies, the largest federal technology investment in our history.
