Hello, everyone. My name is Dylan Reed and welcome to AWS builder guide. This tutorial will focus on Amazon S3 cross region replication which is the ability to replicate objects in a source. Amazon S3 bucket to a destination Amazon S3 bucket in the secondary region. Some use cases of when to use Amazon S3 cross region replication include to help meet compliance needs to reduce latency for users accessing objects in different geographic locations or to improve the operational efficiency of compute systems accessing objects in S3, we will now log into the AWS Management Console to configure Amazon S3 cross regional application and demo replicating an object from one region to another. Once logged into the Aws Management Console, we will browse to the Amazon S3 buckets to configure cross region replication for the demo, I have preconfigured two Amazon S3 buckets, one in region us east, one and one in region us west two. I will be using the S3 bucket in us East one as my source and the bucket in us west two as the destination. We will start configuring cross region application by clicking into our source bucket. Once we are in our source bucket, we will click into the management tab. Once in the management tab, we will scroll down to find replication rules and we will click create replication rule bucket versioning is required to configure cross region replication. And if not enabled on the source and destination buckets, it can be enabled within the create replication rule setting screen by clicking the enabled bucket versioning button. The first step is we will be creating a name for our replication rule. We need to make sure that the status of the rule is enabled. In order for the rule to take effect priority, it can be used when you have multiple cross region replication rules on a single bucket. For demo purposes, we will select apply to all objects in the bucket in the destination settings. Here is we will select our destination S3 bucket. We will click browse S3 and we will choose the bucket that was pre created in us west two region from here, we will select choose path again. Bucket versioning will need to be enabled and can be enabled by clicking the enable bucket versioning button. There are a couple options when considering using an IAM role for the demo, we will have the service, create the role for us. However, you could use an existing custom roll that has been created within your IAM settings. For demo purposes, we will not be selecting replicate objects encrypted with AWS KMS and we will not be selecting change storage class for the replicated objects. We will also not be selecting any of the additional replication options and we will be clicking save to save our replication rule. Cross region application only applies to new objects in the bucket. In order to replicate existing objects, you have to use Batch operations. The description of this youtube video contains a link to Batch operations and how they can be configured. After clicking submit. We should see our replication rule listed in the replication rules table under the management tab of the S3 bucket. After creating and enabling our replication rule in the source bucket, we will test by uploading a file to the bucket in us East one and ensuring that it is replicated to the bucket in us West two configured as our destination. We will click upload, we will click add files and we will find a file that we want to upload to our source bucket. After we have found the file, we will click upload once done and uploaded successfully. You can click close in the top right corner in order to ensure that replication has worked successfully, we will now check our destination bucket in Us West too. We can see that the file has replicated across to the S3 bucket in us West two, meaning that our replication rule in cross region replication has been set up successfully. Thank you for watching this demo. If you have any feedback or suggestions, please reach out to builders guide feedback at Amazon .com. Amazon S3 Cross Region Replication: Step-by-Step Configuration Guide for Data Replication Across AWS Regions

Nov 22, 2024

Amazon Web Services

This video demonstrates how to configure Amazon S3 Cross Region Replication, a feature that allows replicating objects from a source S3 bucket to a destination bucket in another AWS region. The presenter walks through the step-by-step process of setting up replication rules in the AWS Management Console, including enabling bucket versioning, selecting source and destination buckets, and configuring IAM roles. The tutorial covers use cases for cross-region replication such as compliance, latency reduction, and operational efficiency. It also shows how to test the replication by uploading a file to the source bucket and verifying its presence in the destination bucket. The video highlights that cross-region replication only applies to new objects, and existing objects require batch operations for replication.
