The mandate to innovate and modernize digital operations has never been more urgent. The U.S. federal government’s digital transformation efforts—such as optimizing data centers and computing infrastructure—have made significant progress over the past decade. However, as AI technologies accelerate, persistent cybersecurity challenges and growing technological competition mean that further innovation is not optional; it is a national priority.
Cloud as the foundation for success
For more than a decade, Amazon Web Services (AWS) has supported federal agencies in their cloud transformation journeys. AWS was the first cloud provider to launch purpose-built cloud infrastructure designed to meet stringent U.S. government security and compliance needs with the launch of the AWS GovCloud (US) Region in 2011. Subsequent launches included the AWS Secret Region and the AWS Top Secret Region, the first air-gapped commercial cloud accredited to support classified workloads. Today, more than 7,500 government agencies run a wide array of workloads on AWS, demonstrating how cloud technology can drive efficiency and agility across the public sector.
Cloud migration drives transformation

Shifting to AWS Cloud infrastructure allowed the IC to remain at the forefront of innovation, improving mission agility while maintaining the highest levels of security. And the IC’s move to cloud is enabling agencies to incorporate AI and generative AI tools to empower their analysts and accelerate decision-making.
Governments around the world are also looking to scale their generative AI efforts. In Singapore, the Government Technology Agency (GovTech) is responsible for delivering digital services to the public. GovTech collaborated with the AWS Generative AI Innovation Center to build an end-to-end AI/ML development platform that scales generative AI adoption across Singapore’s public sector. Their solution has improved cost performance for generative AI workloads by 75 percent and fast-tracked generative AI use cases for 20 of Singapore’s government agencies.
Last September, AWS announced an investment of £8 billion over five years to build, operate, and maintain data centers in the UK. This expansion of cloud infrastructure through 2028 will increase compute power and provide access to AI, helping the UK accelerate innovation, boost productivity, and compete globally.
Efficiently enabling mission delivery
Beyond cost savings, cloud migration enables federal agencies to deliver on their core missions with unprecedented efficiency. Modern AI and data analytics solutions deployed in the cloud allow agencies to harness real-time insights and automate processes, ultimately improving public services and national security outcomes.
The U.S. Air Force provides a compelling example of how AI-driven solutions can enhance mission readiness. By leveraging predictive maintenance solutions powered by AWS and C3 AI, the Air Force uses AI algorithms and data analytics to monitor operations, detect anomalies, and predict potential equipment failures before they occur. This proactive approach helps reduce downtime and ensures more aircraft are ready for flight, improving operational availability while lowering maintenance costs.

Traditional on-premises infrastructure is no longer sufficient to meet the computational demands of modern AI/ML models.
