Energy Transition

As climate awareness grows around the world, energy companies are embracing the energy transition underway and the digitalization it will require. Today, you must integrate data from core physical infrastructure assets, stream real-time data from field assets, while also developing the capability to condition data in flight.

AWS Energy allows you to harness unlimited, secure cloud computing resources. Its elasticity lets you respond to the exponential volumes of data and rapidly changing conditions you must address. The AWS cloud can spin up and down in seconds, responding to dynamic requirements and providing the processing power to introduce new and innovative programs. It can model proposed initiatives, determine whether they work, and deprovision them if they don’t.

As the leading cloud provider, AWS is also energy efficient – 3.6 times more energy efficient than the median of surveyed enterprise data centers in the U.S. and up to five times more energy efficient than typical EU enterprise infrastructure. And Amazon is on path to powering its operations with 100% renewable energy by 2025 – 5 years ahead of our original target of 2030.

AWS Clean Energy Accelerator program

AWS is committed to innovation in energy and announced the AWS Clean Energy Accelerator program in May 2021 to help address the crucial need for clean tech innovation and collaborative solutions to address the global climate and clean energy challenges. Today, a year later, AWS announced the 12 startups selected to take part in the second cohort of the accelerator. The AWS Clean Energy Accelerator 2.0 is being delivered in Lisbon, Portugal on June 2, 2022, in collaboration with Beta-i, a global innovation consultancy.

Amazon is building a sustainable business for you and the planet

Our newly published 2020 sustainability report details the bold decisions powering our path to decarbonization. The report also shows our work in support of The Climate Pledge, a commitment co-founded by Amazon and Global Optimism that calls on signatories to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040—10 years ahead of the Paris Agreement. Here are a few sustainability report highlights:

  • We reached 65% renewable energy across the business in 2020 (up from 42% in 2019).
  • We became the world’s largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy.
  • Following our order of 100,000 electric vehicles from Rivian in 2019, we rolled out the first of these vehicles in Los Angeles in February 2021.
  • More than 200 companies have joined The Climate Pledge.
  • The Climate Pledge’s signatories represent 26 industries and 21 countries.
  • We decreased our overall carbon intensity by 16% from 2019 to 2020.
  • We created The Climate Pledge Fund — a $2 billion investment to support the development of technologies and services that reduce carbon emissions.

451 Research Report

According to a 451 Research report, moving on-premises workloads to AWS can lower the workload carbon footprint by 88% for the median surveyed US enterprise data centers and 72% on average for the top 10% most efficient enterprises surveyed. AWS infrastructure was found to be 3.6 times more energy efficient than the median surveyed enterprise data center.
