Opportunity | Pushing the Limits of Beauty Tech with Generative AI and AR

Perfect Corp. is a Taiwan-based SaaS company that develops AI and AR solutions for the global beauty and fashion industry. The business offers mobile apps and enterprise AI services that enable customers to virtually try on cosmetics, assess skincare conditions, and receive personalized product recommendations.

Since its founding in 2015, Perfect Corp. has used AWS to support product innovation and global scale. A sharp spike in CPU demands in 2016 marked a turning point in its infrastructure strategy. As traffic surged, the company worked with AWS to scale compute resources—ensuring stability and performance during peak usage.

Over time, its solution suite evolved from on-device AR try-ons to advanced AI-powered services. These include in-house deep learning models for skincare diagnostics, as well as computer vision–based hand and face tracking for virtual try-ons of jewelry, watches, and glasses.

In 2024, Perfect Corp. began integrating generative AI and large language models (LLMs) into its experiences to unlock new levels of interactivity and personalization. The shift was driven by user needs: traditional text-only chat interfaces often struggled to help users express nuances like skin tone or individual skincare needs.

Generative AI also unlocked new use cases, such as photo-based clothes try-on and visual skincare analyses in dermatology and aesthetics. With these innovations came greater demand for data processing and cloud computing—needs the company believed AWS was well-positioned to support.

Tony Tsai, senior marketing director at Perfect Corp., says, “The shift from classic AI to generative AI created entirely new demands on how we process, render, and deliver experiences to users in real time.”

Solution

Modernizing Architecture to Scale Multimodal AI and Generative Workloads

To support the adoption of generative AI and meet rising GPU demands, Perfect Corp. modernized its architecture with a flexible, scalable suite of AWS services. The team uses Amazon EMR to generate product usage insights—such as tracking regional lipstick shade popularity—while Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) Reserved Instances (RI) help manage compute costs through dynamic scaling as usage patterns evolve.

To orchestrate AI inference workloads—including real-time try-ons and generative facial transformations—Perfect Corp. runs Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (Amazon EKS) across multiple Availability Zones. GPU auto scaling supports a wide range of AI services, including features like AI style transfer and AI skin analysis. For asset and model storage, the company uses Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) and Amazon Elastic File System (Amazon EFS). Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS), Amazon ElastiCache, and Amazon OpenSearch Service manage queuing, metadata, and observability.

By combining LLMs with real-time camera input, Perfect Corp. built multimodal systems like its AI Beauty Agent, which interprets both visual and language cues to recommend suitable products. This approach moves beyond static, text-only interfaces to deliver dynamic, personalized experiences.

Security and privacy remain central to Perfect Corp.’s global operations. Sensitive tasks, such as facial rendering, are processed on the client side to minimize exposure of personally identifiable data. To meet compliance across more than 80 countries, the company uses AWS Key Management Service (AWS KMS), AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM), AWS CloudTrail, AWS Web Application Firewall (AWS WAF), and Amazon GuardDuty.

“AWS has given us the flexibility to scale globally while maintaining responsive and secure infrastructure,” says Tsai. “It also enabled seamless GPU scaling, helping us deliver high performance without compromise.”

Outcome

Powering 120 Million Daily Events With 99.99% Availability and Sub-3-Second Latency

Following its infrastructure modernization, Perfect Corp. now supports more than 800 brand partners in over 80 countries, processing 120 million user events and 300 million API calls daily. Despite this scale, the company delivers sub-3-second latency for high-touch experiences—including its AI Beauty Agent and mobile AR try-ons—while maintaining 99.99 percent global availability, even during seasonal surges and product launches. By optimizing compute with Amazon EC2 Reserved Instances, Perfect Corp. has also reduced cloud compute costs by 25 percent.

Several brand partners that integrated Perfect Corp.’s AI-powered skincare diagnostics into their e-commerce sites saw 60–100 percent longer session durations and 250–350 percent higher conversion rates, compared to their previous site performance. Internally, Perfect Corp. has also strengthened its engineering operations by using AWS services like Amazon OpenSearch Service to improve observability and accelerate incident response.

Building on this foundation, Perfect Corp. is expanding into healthcare-adjacent services. New generative AI–powered tools like Skincare Pro and the Aesthetic Simulator are designed to help dermatologists and aesthetic professionals analyze skin conditions more accurately and deliver personalized recommendations.

One example of this expansion is a recent partnership with Inovshop to launch an in-store AI Skin Analysis experience using Skincare Pro. Hosted at the first-ever Amazon-affiliated parapharmacy in Milan, the setup allows customers to receive real-time skin assessments and tailored product suggestions right in the retail space. These innovations further strengthen Perfect Corp.’s position as a leader in real-time, AI-powered consumer experiences.

Reflecting on the company’s innovation journey, Alice Chang, founder and CEO of Perfect Corp., shares: “AWS has been an indispensable partner in our journey to revolutionize the beauty industry. Its robust and scalable infrastructure allows us to handle the immense data processing and cloud computing required for our AI-powered solutions, ensuring a seamless, high-end experience for millions of users.”
