Our Communities

At AWS we’re committed to making a positive social, economic, and environmental impact around the world. We offer our customers the technology products and services they need to help them build innovative solutions in the cloud to solve some of society’s most pressing issues, respond to disasters, act on climate change, and accelerate vital scientific research.

Working with local communities

We established the AWS InCommunities initiative to create and deliver long-term and innovative programs that will have a lasting impact in communities where we have data centers. We’re committed to being good neighbors and believe that by supporting meaningful local programs and being engaged in causes that matter to individual communities, we can help make a positive difference. AWS InCommunities efforts are largely focused on four key areas: STEM education, equity, and access; skills training; environmental stewardship; and hyper local engagement programs tailored to the needs of specific places. To date, AWS InCommunities programs have reached hundreds of thousands of young people and their families in countries across the globe, including the U.S. India, Ireland, Sweden, and South Africa.

Working with AWS, we were determined to design an inclusive program that could take someone from having no previous technical knowledge to being employed in an entry-level data center role. Not many people realize it’s a field you can break into so easily. It’s very open because it’s so new.”

More than 80 local people have secured jobs in cloud computing thanks to a skills training program created by AWS and BMCC.

Responding to disasters

Our AWS Disaster Response team works with disaster relief organizations such as Help.NGO and the Information Technology Disaster Resource Center (ITDRC) to use technology to accelerate rescue and recovery efforts in the aftermath of disasters—whether that’s setting up emergency internet connectivity, enabling secure communications, helping customers leverage edge services to access critical data locally, and much more.

In a disaster, there’s no room for error, and it’s no time to experiment. That’s why we do our experimentation and invention on field testing exercises—before disaster strikes.”

Our economic impact

Our investments in the regions where we operate worldwide include data center construction and operation, employment, employee development, education and community engagement, and renewable energy. These investments have produced substantial economic benefits to local communities and economies—generating economic growth, sustaining jobs and unlocking opportunities for local businesses and suppliers.

AWS recognized the skills and capabilities on offer in Ireland and invested in the country at a time when other businesses were looking elsewhere. The great thing about working for AWS is that for every job that we create, statistically, there will be four or five other people in our supply chain or local community who also benefit.”

Democratizing access to data

We set up the AWS Open Data Sponsorship program to democratize access to datasets of high value to the scientific community and accelerate research—particularly on topics of concern to society and the environment. By covering the cost of storing these datasets in the cloud and making them available for analysis on AWS, we aim to foster the development of new cloud-native techniques, formats, and tools that lower the cost of working with data, and encourage the development of communities that benefit from access to shared datasets. There are currently more than 300 datasets on the program, with categories ranging from climate change, to geospatial, genomics, machine learning, and many more.
