Traditional data stacks within an organization have a diverse mix of systems, tools, technologies, and architecture implementations. These data stack components require complex integrations to ingest, process, and store data to extract value.

The amount of data collected and demand for access to this data have grown considerably. Organizations need to scale and make data accessible quickly to gain business value.

Many legacy data estates consist of disconnected systems, isolating data. Similar to an oil dipstick used to measure the level and condition of oil, traditional organizations monitor the capacity and condition of these individual systems and their data. When oil levels get low, more oil is added. When system storage or performance levels get low, organizations add more storage or upgrade systems. When data quality decreases, they add another ETL pipeline or integrate a new data quality product or service. This dipstick approach to maintaining a data estate is not scalable, decreases data availability, and has a negative impact on operational efficiency. Changes needed to be made to engage new ways of working dynamics to improve integration, reduce complexity, and deliver fast access to data for actionable business insights.

“Data is the new oil” is what we have been hearing; but we believe “data is the new crude oil.” Data must go through a refining process before we can use it as fuel to make better business decisions. The enterprise data ecosystem needs an overhaul, and while the problem may seem larger than life the solution must be compartmentalized.

This post will discuss how the Wipro Data Intelligence Suite (WDIS) built on Amazon Web Services (AWS) modernizes data estates, enables end-to-end automation of cloud migration, and mitigates migration risks.

Organizational Challenges

Organizations face many challenges in the preparation and transformation of legacy data estates. Some areas of consideration include:

  • How can an organization identify application-to-server dependencies across workloads to manage application migration risks?
  • Taking into consideration the dependencies and complexity of an organization’s environment, how can you intelligently plan and analyze environments based on usage metrics?
  • Conversion of data pipelines from one technology to another can take years. How can an organization accelerate this process through automation?
  • An organization’s existing data architecture may span multiple technologies, tools, and processes. How can your data infrastructure be modernized and integrated?
  • How can an organization implement a migration extract, transform, and load pipeline (ETL) and intelligently validate data from on-premises to the cloud?
  • Does an organization need to re-factor, re-architect, or re-host platform components? Or adopt a best-of-breed operationalization approach?

WDIS Approach to Data Modernization

A practical approach to legacy data estate modernization is to first prepare an inventory of different data assets including data stores, pipelines, and visualizations. This process is time-consuming. Using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML)-based automation to collect insights on data pipelines, data stores, and business intelligence visualizations will accelerate the assessment and planning process.

Organizations leveraging DevOps need to include a DevOps migration strategy for critical components to reduce the impact on business. This implies end-to-end migration, integration, and validation of each source to a target component. This process must be repeated for every component, and AI/ML-based automation principles must be engaged to accelerate the overall process and save on effort.Figure 1 – Wipro Data Intelligence Suite is a one-stop solution for migration and modernization.

Transform and Modernize

Wipro Data Intelligence Suite on AWS enables organizations to transform their legacy data infrastructure. WDIS leverages AWS services through each step of the modernization journey including ingestion, storage, analysis, and visualization of data—bringing intelligent capabilities into data and operations.Figure 2 – WDIS modernization pipeline helps organizations migrate to AWS.

Below are steps involved in modernizing the data pipeline with AWS analytics and machine learning services used:

  1. Creation of DDL scripts and loading data into newly created AWS tables.
  2. Creation of business logic (manipulation of data through DMLs) and converting them into equivalent target SQL on AWS.
  3. Migration of ETL pipelines to AWS Glue or third-party. Update and restore integration mappings to point to AWS environment.
  4. Enable business intelligence (BI) layer by repointing reports to Amazon QuickSight or third-party platform.

WDIS helps customers across industries fast-track their cloud data modernization journey, using services provided by AWS. These services include Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3), Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2), AWS Glue, Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS), Amazon DynamoDB, and Amazon Redshift.

Customer Benefits

Customer consideration for data estate modernization is highly focused on operational benefits and organizational impact. WDIS enables customers to plan and execute data estate transformation, providing the following benefits:

  • Gather extensive insights about data pipelines, data stores, and BI visualizations.
  • Assess data quality and develop a customized strategy using the AI/ML-based migration planner and gain key recommendations.
  • Migrate data pipelines, data stores, and BI visualizations securely. Cloud-based data stores can scale up or down in-line with business demand.
  • Data pipelines are automated and integration of business intelligence tools provide access to data stores for actionable insights.
  • Monitor and operationalize the cloud environment. WDIS mitigates migration risks, validates migrations, and builds new data pipelines for ongoing data loads.

Conclusion

Organizations generate high volumes of data every day and understand the path to innovation is directly related to the value extracted from their data. They want to empower teams to make data-driven business decisions to fuel creativity.

Modernization of legacy data estates is key in shifting toward a data-driven organization. Wipro Data Intelligence Suite (WDIS) enables end-to-end automation of an organization’s cloud migration journey, ensuring businesses are able to access data for business value quickly. It delivers an efficient, reliable pathway to cloud-driven modernization, setting the stage for accelerated workflows and enhanced data analytics operations.
