StorReduce on AWS

Highly available, scalable data deduplication and replication for cloud object storage

This Quick Start automatically deploys a secure and fault-tolerant StorReduce cluster on the AWS Cloud, into a configuration of your choice.

StorReduce is a specialized cloud deduplication solution for companies that use object storage like Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) for large volumes of data. With StorReduce on AWS, you can use features such as deduplication, copy-on-write (COW) cloning of data, inter-regional or inter-cloud deduplicated replication, and much more.

This Quick Start uses AWS CloudFormation templates to set up a StorReduce cluster of 3-31 servers across 2-4 Availability Zones. You can deploy StorReduce within a new or existing virtual private cloud (VPC) across multiple Availability Zones, with traffic distributed evenly across StorReduce’s endpoints through a load balancer.

  • The Quick Start architecture for StorReduce includes:

    • A virtual private cloud (VPC) that spans two to four Availability Zones and includes a public and private subnet in each zone. (The diagram shows the environment with three Availability Zones.)*
    • An internet gateway to provide internet access to each subnet.*
    • In the public subnets, NAT gateways to allow outbound internet access for resources in the private subnets.*
    • In the public subnets, Linux bastion hosts to allow inbound Secure Shell (SSH) access to instances in the public and private subnets.*
    • In one of the public subnets, a StorReduce Monitor instance. StorReduce Monitor exposes TCP ports 3000 (for Grafana), 5601 (for Kibana), and 9200 (for Elasticsearch), but provides limited internal TCP port access to StorReduce servers within the private address space. Kibana and Elasticsearch are secured through a customized reverse proxy that uses basic authentication to authenticate against the user management system of StorReduce, and Grafana maintains its own account management system independently.
    • In the private subnets, StorReduce instances. These instances’ Amazon S3 and administration interfaces are exposed through a Classic Load Balancer configuration.

    *  The template that deploys the Quick Start into an existing VPC skips the tasks marked by asterisks and prompts you for your existing VPC configuration.

  •  How to deploy
  • To build your StorReduce environment on AWS, follow the instructions in the deployment guide. The deployment process includes these steps:

    1. Sign up for a StorReduce free trial, or contact StorReduce to get a production license.
    2. If you don't already have an AWS account, sign up at https://aws.amazon.com.
    3. Launch the Quick Start. The deployment takes about 20 minutes for a cluster of three StorReduce servers. You can choose from two options:
    4. (Optional) Set up SSL/TLS certificates for client authentication.
    5. (Optional) Set up client-side or server-side encryption.

    To customize your deployment, you can configure the number of Availability Zones, VPC and bastion host settings, instance types for resources, and StorReduce cluster settings such as the number of servers, the number of shards, and the number of replica shards.

  •  Cost and licenses
  • You are responsible for the cost of the AWS services used while running this Quick Start reference deployment. There is no additional cost for using the Quick Start.

    Primarily, your costs for deploying the Quick Start will consist of a StorReduce license, the cost of running EC2 instances for your StorReduce cluster (including one monitor VM), and data hosting costs in Amazon S3. See the EC2 On-Demand Pricing webpage for running instance costs.

    This deployment uses a Bring Your Own License (BYOL) model for StorReduce. You can obtain a 30-day free trial for using StorReduce or request a quote by emailing info@storreduce.com.
