Opportunity | Using AWS Media Services to modernize OTT platforms for YuppTV
Regional OTT providers often had to choose between three limiting options. Building a streaming platform in-house could take more than 16 months and required expertise across multiple components. These included content processing, app development, recommendations, analytics, and subscription management. A multi-vendor approach shortened the timeline. However, even a basic launch could still take around 6 months or more, add integration complexity, and make cost-effective operations harder to sustain. Shared platforms reduced upfront effort but often limited customization and made it harder to roll out customer-specific features and scale independently.
YuppTV built YVS on Amazon Web Services (AWS), drawing on nearly two decades of experience operating its own large-scale OTT streaming service. Rather than developing a generic software product, the company created YVS around the real-world production and operational requirements it had encountered while delivering content to viewers at scale. Designed specifically for broadcasters, telcos, and digital media providers, YVS offers a practical way to migrate from legacy platforms without disrupting viewers, launch new services faster, and keep greater control as business and audience requirements evolve. To support this model, YuppTV uses AWS Media Services to manage live video workflows, package content for multiple devices, personalize streaming experiences, and deliver content reliably.
Solution | Building dedicated OTT platforms on AWS
Using AWS, YuppTV reduced the time needed to launch an OTT platform to 2–3 months. YVS's fully integrated architecture supports this faster deployment by bringing together AWS video workflows, subscriber management, consumer applications, performance analytics, and operational services in a single platform. Because these capabilities are pre-integrated, customers do not need to connect and manage multiple independent third-party solutions. This reduces technical complexity and implementation time. YVS, YuppTV’s business-to-business offering, now powers more than 20 end-to-end OTT platforms. At scale, YVS delivers 7 billion streaming minutes monthly, supports 2.5 million concurrent viewers at peak, and services more than 100 million active users.
YuppTV designed YVS so that each customer operates within a dedicated environment. This structure gives broadcasters, telecommunications companies, and digital media providers greater control over how their platforms are configured, managed, and developed. YuppTV can introduce customer-specific features without affecting other platforms, while independently scaling resources to accommodate traffic spikes, major live events, or changing viewer demand. Separating customer environments also provides stronger security isolation and helps customers address their individual data governance, regulatory, and compliance requirements. As a result, customers can adapt and expand their OTT service according to their own operational priorities without being constrained by the requirements or performance of others.
To run that model, YVS uses Amazon EC2 Auto Scaling, which automatically adjusts compute capacity to match demand. With this service, YVS can support dedicated customer environments and absorb traffic spikes tied to live sports, breaking news, and other high-interest events. Some of these spikes follow scheduled programming, while others arrive without warning and require immediate scaling.
For the data layer, YuppTV moved from a Postgres-based setup to Amazon Aurora, a relational database service built for high performance and availability. With this change, the company strengthened YVS's ability to handle growing workloads. YuppTV also utilizes Amazon ElastiCache, a fully managed in-memory caching service, with Redis to reduce latency and improve responsiveness across high-traffic streaming environments.
For content delivery, YVS runs on Amazon CloudFront, a network service with low latency and high transfer speeds to support live and on-demand streaming at scale. YVS deploys AWS Elemental MediaLive, a live video processing service, for media encoding and processing workflows, as well as AWS Elemental MediaPackage to prepare and package video streams for delivery across different devices and viewing formats. YVS also uses AWS Elemental MediaTailor to support server-side ad insertion for live and on-demand content. Together, these services support reliable video workflows and streaming performance at scale.
YVS combines an end-to-end OTT platform with dedicated customer environments. Customers can customize and launch services quickly without having to integrate and manage multiple third-party streaming tools. To help protect the OTT platform, YVS uses AWS WAF, a web application firewall, and AWS Shield Advanced, a managed service that helps safeguard applications from distributed denial-of-service attacks. YuppTV also works with AWS Enterprise Support to ensure resilient, low-latency delivery to millions of concurrent viewers during major streaming events and platform updates.
Outcome | Extending OTT innovation
YuppTV is now building on that foundation to expand YVS with artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities using AWS. It is using agentic AI to automate metadata and content management, streamline customer service experience for end users, and improve contextual to help viewers find relevant content across the company's streaming library.
As part of this forward-looking strategy, AWS is working with YuppTV on AI-powered automation. The agents provide continuous, proactive recommendations to improve workload security, reliability, performance, and cost optimization. The company is also exploring AWS DevOps Agent, an autonomous AI-powered operational assistant that helps resolve and prevent incidents.
