New survey: Public sector poised for generative AI revolution

Amazon Web Services (AWS), in partnership with Market Connections, is excited to announce the results of a recent study on how public sector leaders are approaching the adoption of generative artificial intelligence (AI). The survey asked 839 IT decision-makers in US government, education, healthcare, and nonprofit organizations about how their organizations envision incorporating generative AI into their unique missions. The findings show public sector leaders are excited to adopt generative AI technology, but they feel they need a trusted partner to help them explore its full potential.

Generative AI is critical to future of public service

The overwhelming majority of respondents (89 percent) think it’s important for their organization to adopt generative AI, with a quarter reporting that they believe it’s critical—and we agree, the future of public service requires the power generative AI brings to the table. The benefits can’t be ignored. Almost half of respondents (43 percent) are interested in using generative AI to improve operational efficiency, followed by enhancing communications (29 percent), education and workforce development (28 percent), and enhancing citizen services (21 percent).

Accelerating adoption of generative AI

We know that full adoption of generative AI will take careful planning and, in terms of timeline, 12 percent say they’ve already adopted the technologies, while 30 percent expect to within the next 1–2 years, and 16 percent expect to even sooner. Support is key to accelerating this adoption, and more than eight in 10 (85 percent) respondents say they need a trusted partner to help them explore where generative AI could be most effective within their organization. An additional 84 percent would be interested in working with AI and machine learning (AI/ML) experts to explore possibilities for generative AI through use cases, proofs of concept, and production planning.

AWS helps public sector organizations achieve AI goals

As public sector organizations embrace generative AI, AWS stands ready to help them address adoption challenges and drive innovation.

Choosing the right model for your mission is straightforward with our extensive service offerings. From selecting a pre-built application to training a custom model from scratch, AWS has a range of approaches to support generative AI. Customers can use the generative AI assistant Amazon Q, prepare data with Amazon SageMaker, and use Amazon Bedrock to access foundation model (FM) choice from leading AI providers through a single API. Further, you can use the AWS purpose-built infrastructure, including AWS Trainium and AWS Inferentia, to efficiently run generative AI workloads.

Public sector organizations can also rest assured that AWS has extensive experience serving government and highly-regulated industries. You can meet your security and compliance requirements with AWS generative AI offerings and use our guide, Responsible Use of Machine Learning, to set up governance frameworks that make sense.

To overcome technical challenges, public sector leaders can connect with experts in our AWS Generative AI Innovation Center or take advantage of our AI Service Cards, a single place to find information on best practices for AI.

As for cost, public sector organizations can take advantage of the AWS Public Sector Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) Impact Initiative. The two-year, $50 million investment is designed to help public sector organizations – and those that directly support their technology needs – to accelerate innovation in support of critical missions using AWS generative AI services and infrastructure.

Generative AI is already transforming public services, but organizations don’t have to take their adoption journey alone—with AWS, public sector leaders have a partner by their side.
