Overview

Petronash is an engineering firm established in 2000 in the United Arab Emirates and specializes in integrated solutions tailored for the oil and gas industry. Over the years, the company has grown and extended its operations across the globe. Petronash uses SAP to manage its operations, from internal processes to connections to thousands of customers and suppliers in its supply chain. Its SAP system was running on on-premises infrastructure that was facing end of support and needed to be replaced. With the help of AWS Partner Integra Technologies, the company assessed a range of options and decided to migrate to Amazon Web Services (AWS). With around 95 percent of its operations now on AWS, Petronash has reduced operational costs by 35 percent and reported a 30 percent improvement in SAP application performance.

Opportunity | A Critical Migration Planned Meticulously Using AWS MAP

SAP has been the backbone for Petronash’s operations since 2010 and is used throughout the organization. However, it was running on obsolete infrastructure, with server hardware and software that was over 7 years old, posing compatibility and performance concerns. The OEM’s end-of-support announcement for server hardware and a lack of security patches heightened the security risks. In addition, significant time was spent on maintenance and issue resolution, reducing operational efficiency. Meanwhile, end users faced performance, usability, and accessibility challenges, impacting productivity and satisfaction.

Petronash occasionally experienced external connectivity issues on its on-premises data center network that left its offices disconnected. Because the SAP system is a critical business application for operations and supply chain integration, and for customers, an outage could result in a significant loss of revenue. Petronash also wanted to improve its competitive advantage by embracing modernization, optimizing productivity, fostering better business agility, and ensuring continuity in operations through high system availability. In addition, it wanted to remove dependence on the head office for server and network access.

Finally, it needed to strengthen its security measures to meet high levels of security and comply with regulations required by the oil and gas industry. The essential upgrade of its infrastructure was therefore a critical project for the company to get right. Sanjay Mistry, Petronash’s head of IT, decided to assess a range of options, from upgrading and replacing hardware to a move to the cloud.

Solution | A Seamless Migration Delivering Modernized Business Applications

To perform this analysis, Mistry turned to IT partner Integra Technologies. Integra advised the company to use the AWS Migration Acceleration Program (MAP). Using MAP, Petronash was able to assess the suitability of migrating its workloads onto AWS and determine the cost and benefits of doing so. “The Integra team is among the most responsive I’ve worked with,” says Mistry. “When they commit to something, they deliver. What sets them apart is their expert knowledge of AWS and SAP.” After the assess phase of MAP was complete, it was clear that a migration to AWS was the best route for Petronash. Operating costs were projected to be lower on AWS compared to on premises, and AWS offered Petronash some key benefits, such as seamless scalability, agility, and the ability to upgrade its operating systems. By using MAP, Petronash also qualified for AWS service credits that helped to further drive down the cost of the migration. The findings of the MAP assess stage helped Mistry write the business case for the migration and win management approval.

Integra and Petronash ran the MAP mobilize and migrate/modernize stages using Agile processes, with the project teams collaborating in daily standup meetings to plan, test, and execute the multi-stage migration to AWS. The first application to be moved was Petronash’s HR system, followed by the SAP ERP system. Each migration was seamless, with business users expressing satisfaction at the increased responsiveness of the systems. Although there were lift-and-shift elements, the project team also took every opportunity to upgrade and modernize systems. Petronash’s workloads were migrated to Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2), which offers secure and resizable compute capacity for virtually any workload. In addition to the SAP HANA database, the company also uses Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) for data storage and processing. The team also planned and introduced a number of automations to speed up operations. These included an AI-powered service to ingest and process data in Arabic from documents, invoices, and files submitted by suppliers. Integra built AWS Lambda functions to manage additional automations, including regular system backups to Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3).

Petronash uses AWS Control Tower to set up and manage a secure landing zone for its infrastructure and systems. Using this, the company can enforce security and compliance policies, simplify account management, and gain granular control over access to its systems. The move to AWS also means that the Petronash IT team can spend less time maintaining its system and more time on new projects. “AWS is very simple and easy to manage,” says Mistry. “Initially, Integra managed the AWS systems for us, but they executed a knowledge transfer process and ran training sessions so my team could take over.”

Outcome | Operational Costs Cut by 35%, with a 30% Performance Boost

With 95 percent of its operations migrated to AWS in just 6 months, Petronash can report a range of benefits. Eliminating redundant third-party solutions has reduced operational costs by 35 percent, and Petronash has reported a 30 percent improvement in application performance, with reduced latency and enhanced access speeds across global operations. New business applications can now be tested in a day by spinning up a new Amazon EC2 instance—a process that previously could take up to 3 months. Now the company can scale as it needs, with the team able to quickly add or remove compute and storage—and it pays only for what it uses. With its systems running on AWS, Petronash also has better availability and resiliency compared to before. Being on AWS helps it comply with industry regulations and gives it robust redundancy and disaster recovery arrangements.

On AWS, Petronash has a near-zero RPO (recovery point objective) and a 30-minute RTO (recovery time objective) for its databases, including the SAP HANA database, and very low RPO/RTO for other workloads, which ensures continuity for business-critical applications and minimizes risks of downtime. For Mistry, the successful migration gives Petronash a platform for future transformation projects, including an upgrade to S/4HANA from SAP ECC and further AI implementations using native AWS services. “This has been one of the most critical projects I’ve been involved with,” says Mistry. “The success of the project was down to meticulous planning and execution—even the minutest details were discussed during the implementation phase. Both teams were transparent, and we had one goal in mind.”

The project has been hailed as a success by the Petronash management team. “Using AWS has modernized our IT infrastructure, enhanced operational excellence, and reduced our dependence on a single data center for all locations,” says Kalyan Sagiraju, global head of IT and business systems. “The transition of SAP from on premises to AWS was so seamless that end users didn’t notice any difference—it was business as usual.” Srinivas M. Raju, chief executive officer of Petronash, adds, “the migration to AWS is a pivotal IT milestone, positioning us for sustained growth, agility, and innovation in a highly competitive industry.”
