Use this Quick Start to deploy Confluence Data Center from Atlassian on the AWS Cloud in less than 30 minutes.

Confluence is team collaboration software that changes how modern teams work. Confluence Data Center is a self-managed solution that gives you high availability, performance at scale, and disaster recovery for uninterrupted access to Confluence for all your teams.

The Quick Start includes AWS CloudFormation templates that automatically deploy Confluence Data Center into a highly available, secure AWS Cloud environment. The Quick Start also includes a guide with step-by-step deployment and configuration instructions and best practices to help you get the most out of Confluence Data Center on the AWS Cloud.

  • What you'll build

    Use this Quick Start to set up the following Confluence Data Center environment on AWS:

    • A virtual private cloud (VPC) configured with public and private subnets. This provides the network infrastructure for your Confluence deployment.*
    • An Internet gateway to provide access to the Internet.*
    • In the public subnets, managed network address translation (NAT) gateways to allow outbound Internet access for resources in the private subnets.*
    • In the public subnets, Linux bastion hosts to allow inbound Secure Shell (SSH) access to EC2 instances in public and private subnets.*
    • In the private subnets, Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) PostgreSQL as the external database for Confluence.
    • In the private subnets, an Auto Scaling group with Confluence instances based on Amazon Linux.
    • In the private subnets, an Auto Scaling group with Synchrony instances based on Amazon Linux.
    • Amazon Elastic File System (Amazon EFS) as the shared file system for storage.
    • Your choice to create a new VPC or deploy into your existing VPC on AWS. The template that deploys the Quick Start into an existing VPC skips the components marked by asterisks above.

  • Deployment details

    Build your Confluence Data Center cluster in a few simple steps:

    1. Sign up for an AWS account.
    2. Launch the Quick Start into a new VPC, if you want to build a new AWS infrastructure. (View template)

      Launch the Quick Start into an existing VPC, if you already have your AWS environment set up. (View template)
      The deployment takes about 20 minutes.
    3. Configure Confluence Data Center on one node. In this step, you can also specify your Confluence Data Center license key or sign up for an evaluation license.
    4. Add instances to the Confluence Data Center cluster.
    5. Add nodes to the Synchrony cluster and enable collaborative editing.


    To customize your deployment, you can choose different instance types for your resources, configure your cluster nodes, and adjust file server and database settings.

  • Cost and licenses

    You are responsible for the cost of the AWS services used while running this Quick Start reference deployment. There is no additional cost for using the Quick Start.

    The AWS CloudFormation template for this Quick Start includes configuration parameters that you can customize. Some of these settings, such as instance type, storage size, and IOPS, will affect the cost of deployment. See the pricing pages for each AWS service you will be using for cost estimates.

    The Quick Start requires an Atlassian account and a license to use Confluence Data Center. For information on obtaining a Confluence Data Center license, see the Atlassian pricing page. This Quick Start can’t be used with Confluence Server licenses.

    If you want to evaluate Confluence Data Center, you can also request an evaluation license after you deploy the Quick Start, when you configure Confluence Data Center.
