AWS for M&E Blog
[Updated 1/3] M&E releases and launches from re:Invent 2019
September 8, 2021: Amazon Elasticsearch Service has been renamed to Amazon OpenSearch Service. See details.
With more than 75 launches and announcements of new services and major features during re:Invent 2019, we wanted to be sure you knew about those most relevant for media workloads.
Below you can watch Ben Masek, Global Business Development Lead, Worldwide M&E, give an overview of what was launched.
Overall, we saw three big themes for M&E come out of the announcements at re:Invent 2019:
Low latency where it matters most
AWS Local Zones
AWS Local Zones are a new type of AWS infrastructure deployment that places AWS compute, storage, database, and other services closer to large population, industry, and IT centers where no AWS Region exists today. With AWS Local Zones, you can easily run latency-sensitive portions of applications local to end-users and resources in a specific geography, delivering single-digit millisecond latency for use cases including media & entertainment content creation, real-time gaming, and machine learning. Learn more
AWS Wavelength
AWS Wavelength enables developers to deploy their applications to Wavelength Zones, AWS infrastructure deployments that embed AWS compute and storage services within the telecommunications providers’ datacenters at the edge of the 5G networks, and seamlessly access the breadth of AWS services in the region. This enables developers to deliver applications that require single-digit millisecond latencies such as game and live video streaming, machine learning inference at the edge, and augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR). Learn more
AWS Outposts
AWS Outposts is a fully managed service that extends AWS infrastructure, AWS services, APIs, and tools to virtually any datacenter, co-location space, or on-premises facility for a truly consistent hybrid experience. AWS Outposts is ideal for workloads that require low latency access to on-premises systems, local data processing, or local data storage. Learn more
Making Media Workloads Smarter
Amazon Kendra
Amazon Kendra is a highly accurate and easy to use enterprise search service that’s powered by machine learning. Kendra delivers powerful natural language search capabilities to your websites and applications so your end users can more easily find the information they need within the vast amount of content spread across your company. Learn more
Rekognition Custom Labels
With Amazon Rekognition Custom Labels, you can identify the objects and scenes in images that are specific to your business needs. This enables a range of use cases, including discovery of content for video production. Learn more
Amazon Augmented AI (A2I)
Amazon Augmented AI (Amazon A2I) makes it easy to build the workflows required for human review of ML predictions. Amazon A2I brings human review to all developers, removing the undifferentiated heavy lifting associated with building human review systems or managing large numbers of human reviewers. Learn more
AWS Data Exchange
AWS Data Exchange makes it easy to find, subscribe to, and use third-party data in the cloud. Qualified data providers include category-leading brands such as Reuters, who curate data from over 2.2 million unique news stories per year in multiple languages. Once subscribed to a data product, you can use the AWS Data Exchange API to load data directly into Amazon S3 and then analyze it with a wide variety of AWS analytics and machine learning services. Enhancements to AWS Core Services
AWS G4 Graphic Instances
EC2 G4 instances are optimized for machine learning application deployments such as image classification, object detection, recommendation engines, automated speech recognition, and language translation. These instances are also cost-effective solutions for graphics-intensive applications such as remote graphics workstations, video transcoding, and game streaming in the cloud. Learn more
Statmux for AWS MediaLive
Statistical Multiplexing (Statmux) is a feature of the AWS Elemental MediaLive video processing service that lets you prepare and share live broadcast video for distribution. With Statmux, you can process and originate live content and share it with distribution partners for delivery over satellite, cable, or terrestrial networks. Statmux for MediaLive is an alternative to traditional, hardware-based approaches to preparing broadcast video for delivery, allowing you to deliver live content more flexibly and efficiently, reduce infrastructure and management costs, and deliver high-quality video with built-in reliability. Learn more
EC2 Image Builder
EC2 Image Builder simplifies the creation, maintenance, validation, sharing, and deployment of Linux or Windows Server images for use with Amazon EC2 and on-premises. Image Builder significantly reduces the effort of keeping images up-to-date and secure by providing a simple graphical interface, built-in automation, and AWS-provided security settings. With Image Builder, there are no manual steps for updating an image nor do you have to build your own automation pipeline. Learn more
AWS Graviton2-powered EC2 Instances
Built on AWS Nitro System, these EC2 instances will be powered by the new Graviton2 processor, a custom AWS design that is built using a 7 nm (nanometer) manufacturing process. This processor can deliver up to 7x the performance of the first-generation A1 instances, including twice the floating point performance, and can speed memory access by up to 5x. Learn more
AWS Compute Optimizer
Over-provisioning resources can lead to unnecessary infrastructure cost, and under-provisioning can lead to poor application performance. AWS Compute Optimizer delivers intuitive and easily actionable Amazon EC2 instance recommendations so that you can identify optimal Amazon EC2 instance types for your workloads. Learn more
AWS Nitro Enclaves
Nitro Enclaves helps customers reduce the attack surface area for their most sensitive data processing applications. Enclaves offers an isolated, hardened, and highly constrained environment to host security-critical applications. Nitro Enclaves includes cryptographic attestation for your software, so that you can be sure that only authorized code is running, as well as integration with the AWS Key Management Service. Learn more
UltraWarm
UltraWarm is now available in preview. It takes a new approach to providing hot-warm tiering in Amazon Elasticsearch Service, offering up to 900TB of storage, at almost a 90% cost reduction over existing options. UltraWarm is a seamless extension to the Amazon Elasticsearch Service experience, enabling you to query and visualize across both hot and UltraWarm data, all from your familiar Kibana interface. Accelerated site-to-site VPN using Global Accelerator
When creating an AWS Site-to-Site VPN connection to an AWS Transit Gateway, you can now enable Acceleration to take advantage of performance improvement using the AWS global network. Traffic from your customer gateway device is routed through the closest AWS edge location and traverses the congestion-free and redundant AWS global network to reach your VPN endpoint in AWS. Learn more
Transit Gateway Inter-Regional Peering
The ability to peer Transit Gateways between different AWS Regions enables customers to extend this connectivity and build global networks spanning multiple AWS Regions. Traffic using inter-region Transit Gateway peering always stays on the AWS global network and never traverses the public internet, thereby reducing threat vectors, such as common exploits and DDoS attacks. Learn more
Transit Gateway Multicast Support
AWS Transit Gateway multicast makes it easy for customers to build multicast applications in the cloud and distribute data across thousands of connected Virtual Private Cloud networks. Multicast delivers a single stream of data to many users simultaneously. It is a preferred protocol to stream multimedia content and subscription data, such as news articles and stock quotes, to a group of subscribers. Learn more
AWS Lambda Provisioned Concurrency
Provisioned Concurrency makes it easier than ever to develop highly scalable serverless applications with predictable latency on AWS Lambda. Developers can simply set their expected concurrency on any version or alias of a function. Thereafter, AWS Lambda ensures that the function begins executing developers’ code within double digit milliseconds of being invoked. Learn more
