Overview
AWS Transform MGN, formerly AWS Application Migration Service, is AWS's dedicated rehosting service that automates the conversion of your source servers (physical, virtual, or cloud) into native Amazon EC2 instances. AWS Transform MGN handles continuous block-level replication, automated machine conversion, and orchestrated cutover, enabling you to migrate workloads with minimal downtime and without modifying your source environment. AWS Transform MGN operates within a broader end-to-end migration workflow that also includes discovery, wave planning, and network migration.
Choose your rehost path:
AWS Transform MGN offers two ways to rehost, depending on how much automation you need:
Agentic rehost with AWS Transform: AI-driven automation handles the full setup and per-wave preparation, including initializing MGN, configuring IAM permissions, generating launch templates, setting up post-launch actions, installing replication agents, generating inventory, configuring replication settings, and enriching network mappings, all without manual intervention. Ideal for migrations spanning multiple accounts or requiring precise configuration where manual errors introduce delays.
Self-directed rehost through the MGN console: You manage each configuration step directly for full control over your rehost workflow. Ideal for teams that prefer granular, step-by-step management of their migration.
Both paths use the same underlying replication and cutover engine. You can switch between them at any point during your migration without losing progress.
