You can now monetize live HLS video streams without SCTE infrastructure with AWS Elemental MediaTailor. Using MediaTailor, content owners can insert pre-roll advertisements before stream start, overwriting the beginning of their live streams with personalized ads to monetize every stream start to support a low-investment, high-return monetization strategy.

The duration of the pre-roll advertising can be defined as part of the MediaTailor configuration or by defining a duration within your Ad Decision Service (ADS) response. By overwriting the beginning of the manifest, MediaTailor is able to maintain the live edge to help ensure viewers do not fall behind the live viewing experience. If you do use SCTE markers for ads, you can apply granular settings around national and local ad breaks or schedule dynamic ad insertion for ad breaks only during certain times. AWS Elemental MediaPackage and MediaTailor now work together to use ad markers based on custom business rules using discrete segmentation_type_id values.
