You can now set time based retention policies on Data Lifecycle Manager. With this launch, DLM allows you to set snapshot retention period in the following interval units: days, weeks, months and years.

Time-based retention policies make it easier to adhere to your compliance regulations, which require you to retain backups for a specified time interval.

We launched DLM in July 2018 to enable automation of creation and retention of EBS volume snapshots via policies. Since then, we have made DLM easier to use with automatic copy of tags from source volume to snapshots, CloudFormation support for DLM policies and support for more frequent backups. Today, we extend the existing count based retention capability and add support for time based retention.
