Amazon QuickSight enhances dashboard performance with Dynamic Querying and other dataset optimizations

Posted on: Dec 22, 2020

Amazon QuickSight adds dashboard performance improvements and query cost optimization through Dynamic Querying, along with introducing advanced data preparation capabilities.

Dynamic Querying enables direct query datasets that contain joined tables to run more efficiently. Joins are applied dynamically so that only the subset of tables needed to render a visual are used in the join. This optimizes queries and results in visuals loading much faster than before. With this release, all new and existing datasets are automatically set to use Dynamic Querying capability without needing any configuration.

There are a handful of additional improves to Data Prep as well. QuickSight now supports joins between a maximum of 32 tables (up from 10) and can auto-discover join relationship based on table definitions and heuristics such as matching column names. This helps guide dataset owners to make optimal join configuration, thereby increasing the dataset performance further. Additionally, dataset owners can now zoom-in and zoom-out of the join editor, which comes handy when the dataset involves a large number of tables. Lastly, dataset owners can choose to turn dataset auto-preview on or off as needed. When turned off, dataset owners can edit joins, create calculated fields, and/or make column selections, all without having to run potentially expensive queries on the source tables.
