AWS IoT Core, a managed cloud service that lets customers connect billions of IoT devices and routes trillions of messages to AWS services, and AWS IoT Core Device Advisor, a cloud-based fully-managed test capability to help developers validate their IoT devices for reliable and secure connectivity with AWS IoT Core, announces the General Availability of an upgraded message broker service that includes support for the MQTT version 5 protocol. MQTT5 is an updated device-to-device messaging communication standard that includes significant feature improvements over the previous MQTT version 3.1.1.
The MQTT protocol has become a popular standard for Internet of Things (IoT) data transmission because of its lightweight implementation, especially for low powered devices that are constrained with network bandwidth challenges. The latest version of the industry standard MQTT5 protocol is a significant upgrade, introducing several key features that make systems more robust. Examples include, new Message Headers to allow for faster message processing without the need to decode the message payload, Message and Session Expiration to enable better timeouts, and Request/Response topics to allow message subscribers to positively acknowledge receipt of a message to the sender.
With this release, customers can connect their devices to AWS IoT Core over MQTT5, or leverage a mix of MQTT version 3 or MQTT version 5 connected devices interacting with one another to support heterogeneous deployments. Moreover, all the existing test cases within AWS IoT Device Advisor now support MQTT5, making it easier for customers to validate MQTT functionality during device software development before on-boarding them to AWS IoT core. Also, as part of the AWS Device Qualification Program, AWS Partners can now qualify their devices over MQTT5. The AWS Device Qualification Program helps AWS Partners qualify a wide variety of devices that work with AWS.
