Amazon Kinesis Video Streams now offers a simple, efficient and cost-effective way to connect to IP cameras on customer premises, locally record and store video from those cameras, and stream videos to the cloud on a customer defined schedule for long term storage, playback and analytical processing.

You can download the KVS edge runtime agent and deploy it at your on-premise edge compute devices. Alternatively, you can easily deploy them in docker containers running on Amazon EC2 machines. Once deployed, you can use the new Amazon Kinesis Video Streams APIs to update video recording and cloud uploading configurations. The feature works with any IP camera that can stream over RTSP protocol, and requires no additional firmware deployment on the cameras.

We offer the following Amazon Kinesis Video Streams installations for the edge runtime agent:

  • On Snowball Edge: You can run the Amazon Kinesis Video Streams edge runtime agent on AWS Snowball Edge devices
  • As a Greengrass component: You can install the Amazon Kinesis Video Streams edge runtime agent as a Greengrass component on any Greengrass certified device
  • On a native IoT deployment: You can install the Amazon Kinesis Video Streams edge runtime agent natively on any compute instance: Edge SDK leverages AWS IoT core for managing edge configuration through the Edge cloud APIs

KVS edge runtime and APIs are available in the US West (Oregon) Region. AWS will not charge for the use of this feature during the preview period, though you may still incur KVS or other AWS costs associated with usage.
