VT1 instances are the first Amazon EC2 instances that deliver dedicated hardware acceleration for video transcoding, and are optimized for workloads such as live streaming, video conferencing, video library optimization, and just-in-time asset transcoding. VT1 is powered by the AMD-Xilinx Alveo U30 media accelerator and can support streams up to 4K UHD resolution at 60 frames per second (fps) and can transcode up to 64 simultaneous 1080p60 streams in real time.

VT1 instances now support AMD-Xilinx Video SDK 3.0, adding features for Ultra low latency (ULL) encoding, Dynamic GOP and Min/max frame quantization parameter (QP) bounding. Customers with interactive video applications such as video collaboration and cloud gaming will now see faster response times with subframe encode latency in the ULL mode. Customers will also be able to optimize bitrate to their available bandwidth using dynamic GOP support and on-the-fly min/max QP adjustment. These enhancements are applicable to GStreamer, FFmpeg, and XMA. This release also brings bug fixes and enhanced OS/kernel support.

Customers can get started quickly with VT1 instances by launching the AMD-Xilinx Video SDK AMI available on the AWS Marketplace to access a pre-built development environment to test and migrate existing video pipelines built with FFmpeg or GStreamer. To take advantage of the new features, existing customers should upgrade to the newest driver version and relaunch their instances.

VT1 instances are available in the AWS US East (N. Virginia), US West (Oregon), Europe (Ireland), and Asia Pacific (Tokyo) regions.
