Today, we are excited to announce the expansion of instance refresh to support instances on standby or protected from scale in. For instances on standby, you now have the options to terminate them, ignore them altogether, as well as the current option to wait until they return to in service. For protected instances, you now have the options to refresh them, ignore them altogether, as well as the current option to wait for them until you remove scale-in protection.

Previously, when an instance refresh tried to replace standby or protected instances, the refresh would time out and cause the refresh to fail. Now, when you start an instance refresh, you can use the new settings to prevent the refresh from failing due to timeouts.

Instance refresh support for standby and protected instances is available in all AWS regions including AWS GovCloud (US) regions. This feature is available through the AWS Management Console, the AWS SDKs, or the AWS Command Line Interface. CloudFormation support will be coming soon.
