AWS IoT SiteWise now supports time-weighted average (timeweightedavg) and time-weighted standard deviation (timeweightedstdev) functions that make it easier to automatically factor in the numerical levels of a particular variable, as well as the amount of time spent in that variable. With the new time-series functions, process engineers can define metrics for time-series data that isn’t regularly sampled and get a representative view of their operations.

By using the time-weighted average function, safety managers can calculate a worker’s daily exposure to hazardous substances (such as chemicals, dust, fumes, mists, gases, or vapors) or environmental conditions (such as occupational noise) while factoring the average levels of that substance/condition and the average amount of time spent in the area of exposure. Safety regulators use this calculation to develop guidelines on permissible exposure limits, and it is also critical for employers to regularly assess workers’ exposure to determine what protective measures should be taken to ensure worker safety. Production managers can use Time-weighted Avg to calculate average uptime, downtime, and throughput across different days, shifts, and sections of the plants. They can use Time-weighted StdDev to detect slow failures by trend line.

For guidance on usage, see references for timeweightedavg and timeweightedstdev in our temporal functions documentation.
