Centralized firewall management has saved time and improved network security across locations

  • February 20, 2026
  • Review from a verified AWS customer

What is our primary use case?

My main use case for Barracuda CloudGen Firewall is to secure our company's main and backup internet connections, and we also use it for failover of our main internet to our backup. We recently replaced a WatchGuard Firebox with this firewall because the cost of maintenance was high on the WatchGuard, and the management of Barracuda CloudGen Firewall was much simpler and could be done without a locally installed client.

You can manage Barracuda CloudGen Firewall from anywhere with Barracuda Cloud Control, even running firmware updates from your phone on all your Barracuda devices. It makes my job so much easier.

A specific situation where Barracuda CloudGen Firewall helped me manage my internet connections and made my job easier is when we switched to Barracuda CloudGen Firewall model F400. Coming from an older command line managed firewall, the F400 has made management of our firewalls much easier, and it is our primary firewall solution.

We use Barracuda CloudGen Firewall to watch real-time traffic, which is easy to do when trying to troubleshoot user issues getting to a particular service. Ease of management is a significant advantage. You can remotely manage it from anywhere with cloud control.

What is most valuable?

The best features Barracuda CloudGen Firewall offers include extreme customization for any environment and support for all configuration with firewall rules. Security features such as hardware-level antivirus and advanced threat protection, as well as SSL inspection, ensure all traffic passes through the appliance.

Control Center is far superior to other products for globally managing numerous firewalls and creating and deploying templates on the fly.

These features have improved security and prevented any cybersecurity threats before they attack our system, making things easier for my team day-to-day.

The VPN connections have never been easier. Once configured within Control Center, drag and drop is all that is needed to connect to internet-connected firewalls easily.

Barracuda CloudGen Firewall has positively impacted my organization by allowing us to control the entire network from one location, hence saving a lot of time from moving from one location to another. All services and processes work very well and are reliable, with high uptime.

For MSPs looking to deploy and control numerous firewalls with ease, this is the best product available.

Since switching to Barracuda CloudGen Firewall, we have saved time of 30 to 40 percent because we are able to control the network from one location. We have also saved costs of 20 percent because we do not have to move from one location to another to control the network.

What needs improvement?

Barracuda CloudGen Firewall could be improved as it has a very high learning curve. It is definitely not a one and done firewall, as a one and done firewall requires a lot of dedicated time to get the machine running the way you want.

To improve Barracuda CloudGen Firewall, there should be a lot of tutorials and videos online to help new users. Multiple ways to configure for the same service or feature takes time to determine your customized build.

In addition to previous points, the interface can sometimes be clunky when trying to determine how it is organized or arranged.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Barracuda CloudGen Firewall for the past three and a half years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Barracuda CloudGen Firewall is very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Barracuda CloudGen Firewall is highly scalable and grows with my organization's needs.

How are customer service and support?

For the few times that I have been able to reach out to customer support, they have been proactive and supportive.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Before Barracuda CloudGen Firewall, I previously used SonicWall.

How was the initial setup?

My experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing is that the cost was effective and affordable.

What was our ROI?

I have seen a return on investment with Barracuda CloudGen Firewall, as it makes our environment more secure through the robust security features it offers. It has drastically reduced the amount of infections from cybersecurity threats and makes managing close to 50 clients or more for our engineers much easier, hence saving a lot of time and cost.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Before choosing Barracuda CloudGen Firewall, I evaluated WatchGuard as another option.

What other advice do I have?

I deduct those two points because it has a very complex and steep learning curve to get started, but it is very highly customizable and can control the entire network from one location. That is what makes it receive a rating of eight, hence saving time and cost.

The security features such as hardware-level antivirus and advanced threat protection, as well as SSL inspection, ensure all traffic passes through the appliance to increase security and prevent cybersecurity threats on time.

Barracuda CloudGen Firewall is deployed in my organization using a hybrid cloud setup.

We purchased Barracuda CloudGen Firewall through the AWS Marketplace.

We do utilize the advanced threat features to provide the first layer for virus through malware detection and prevention before the traffic ever gets to the antivirus software that is used on each workstation.

My advice for others looking into using Barracuda CloudGen Firewall is that anyone that has a business or stores client's data must have a next-generation firewall with zero exemptions. If you have multiple sites, configuring a VPN between them takes less than a minute to configure. These devices have many more features than their competitors but often cost less. Barracuda CloudGen Firewall is very cost-effective, and I highly recommend it. I rate Barracuda CloudGen Firewall an eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Hybrid Cloud

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

Reliable security has boosted application performance and supports remote connectivity

  • February 19, 2026
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

My main use case for Barracuda CloudGen Firewall is as a combined solution for application performance boost and secure SD-WAN, which I typically rely on to boost application performance by ensuring reliable connectivity to remote sites and users.

There are rush hours where traffic from cloud apps and off-network users increases and crowds the network. With Barracuda CloudGen Firewall, we are able to boost performance of crucial apps and high-priority projects in a very secure manner. This way, my top-priority ports do not experience downtimes.

Barracuda CloudGen Firewall helps me boost application performance specifically by being capable of directly sending internet traffic with appropriate security inspection within no backhauls, whether it is SaaS or internet-bound traffic.

In my department, we have achieved consistent network link pooling and data caching optimization for both handling critical workloads, thereby saving a lot of work. There is always enough bandwidth for applications with Barracuda CloudGen Firewall optimization. We are, however, not completely satisfied with their link redundancy handling capabilities.

I use Barracuda CloudGen Firewall as a router and firewall in all of our organization globally, which is to terminate all management VPN tunnels to our organization and within the same country to avoid problems with long-distance internet connections.

What is most valuable?

The best features Barracuda CloudGen Firewall offers, in my experience, include its ability to scale dynamically, dispatch traffic to match workloads, utilize next-gen firewalls to assure data security, and provide great routing, firewall, and network management.

Barracuda CloudGen Firewall's next-gen firewall capabilities increase the level of network protection against threats, visibility, and control of applications that users access. I also appreciate the URL filtering to block unauthorized or prohibited websites on the internal corporate network, protection against diverse malware at the edge of the network, and firewall redundancy with another backup appliance.

Barracuda CloudGen Firewall has positively impacted my organization by increasing the level of network protection against threats from twenty percent to forty-five percent. It has enhanced visibility and control of applications that users access. It prevents cyberattacks and optimizes network and user management, making security more reliable over the past years.

I measured the improvement from twenty percent to forty-five percent based on fewer incidents of data breaches and also robust hardware that supports more than eighty thousand simultaneous connections, thereby being very stable.

What needs improvement?

To improve Barracuda CloudGen Firewall, it would be great to manage all firewalls in one pane of glass without charging more for this, get better push notifications, and also have better online documentation to make the learning curve much easier and smooth.

Barracuda CloudGen Firewall still cannot combat link redundancy speedily. One time a network link failed, and it took a while before restoring traffic from the backup link, so this should be highly improved.

I chose an eight out of ten because Barracuda CloudGen Firewall cannot combat link redundancy speedily, while a ten rating is warranted as it has mainly boosted our application performance by ensuring reliable connectivity to remote sites and users.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Barracuda CloudGen Firewall for almost five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

In my experience, Barracuda CloudGen Firewall has been reliable and very high performing. I have not noticed any lagging or downtime.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Barracuda CloudGen Firewall's scalability is great, as it can handle growth easily.

How are customer service and support?

I have reached out to the customer support team a few times, and they have been very responsive and proactive.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I previously used a different solution called Smoothwall SWG.

I decided to switch from Smoothwall SWG to Barracuda CloudGen Firewall because Smoothwall SWG was more costly compared to Barracuda CloudGen Firewall, and it had many complicated features.

How was the initial setup?

Barracuda CloudGen Firewall is very easy to set up and manage VPN connections, and it has great customization options.

It is very easy to manage Barracuda CloudGen Firewall. The dashboard allows us to configure all our need-to-see options, and the user interface is easily navigated and customized.

What was our ROI?

Since we started using Barracuda CloudGen Firewall, security has greatly improved, which is a notable return on investment.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

My experience with pricing is that while the licensing cost can be reduced and is somewhat costly, the price is good and affordable.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Before choosing Barracuda CloudGen Firewall, I evaluated other options, including Panda Adaptive Defense 360.

What other advice do I have?

My advice to others looking into using Barracuda CloudGen Firewall is that it is perfect for any size of organization to help remote workers connect seamlessly with the VPN product, boosting security and preventing data breaches, so the network is made stable. I gave this product a rating of eight out of ten.

Remote work security has improved and web filtering now protects users from risky sites

  • February 04, 2026
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

My main use case for Barracuda CloudGen Firewall is that we purchased it to replace our current Cisco firewall tool. We have always suffered issues trying to manage the Cisco firewall, which is the reason why we switched from it. Barracuda CloudGen Firewall is user-friendly, much more intuitive, and more cost-effective. We started using CudaLaunch to begin with as a necessity from the ongoing pandemic, and it has saved us time. Being that we are new to Barracuda CloudGen Firewall, we have not yet moved all of our firewall settings over to it and implemented the firewall portion fully, but we intend to do that very soon.

A quick specific example of how I'm using Barracuda CloudGen Firewall right now is that since we have only implemented Barracuda CloudGen Firewall a few months ago, we only started using the CudaLaunch VPN portion of the firewall. We had used several other VPN utilities, and they had all had issues over time, mostly with disconnecting the user. With this tool, we have not had any issue with Barracuda CloudGen Firewall CudaLaunch VPN at all in the months we have been using it. With the pandemic, we have been using it heavily over the past few months.

When we began using Barracuda CloudGen Firewall for the traditional edge firewall use case, it does very well in this role. The virtual services hosting modality, even with an on-premises appliance, provides really great flexibility to meet our specific needs. It also allows us to easily update the firewalls to adjust to changing needs within our organization.

What is most valuable?

The best features Barracuda CloudGen Firewall offers in my opinion are flexibility in deployment, basic SD-WAN, edge firewall, and application visibility and web filtering.

Out of flexibility in deployment, SD-WAN, edge firewall, application visibility, and web filtering, the one that has had the biggest impact for my team is basic web filtering to back up on devices.

Barracuda CloudGen Firewall offers a cost-effective SD-WAN for our small organization, even for the smaller sites.

Barracuda CloudGen Firewall has positively impacted my organization by serving as both our primary edge firewalls and our SD-WAN concentrator and endpoints. We have noticed some return on investments, especially since it is very cost-effective for any type of organization. It prevents IBR attacks and has helped us during this pandemic. It has a good, easy-to-use interface.

What needs improvement?

One of the main challenges that we face with Barracuda CloudGen Firewall is that the URL filtering and application control license are not perpetual and need to be renewed every year, so it can be a bit expensive.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Barracuda CloudGen Firewall for almost a year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Barracuda CloudGen Firewall is very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Barracuda CloudGen Firewall handles my organization's growth well, so it is very scalable.

How are customer service and support?

For the few times that I have reached out to them, Barracuda CloudGen Firewall's customer support has been very proactive and supportive. I would rate the customer support an eight out of ten, but sometimes they are unreachable. They should improve on that.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I previously used AWS Backup before switching to Barracuda CloudGen Firewall.

How was the initial setup?

My experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing for Barracuda CloudGen Firewall is that the setup was easy and quick, with no time wasted. However, the price can get a bit expensive, especially for a small organization working on a tight budget.

What was our ROI?

In terms of return on investment, the firewall admin application has given value. This program saves a ton of time in configuration versus using the web-based configuration. You can only pick one, and for me, it is a no-brainer. I would turn the web-based configuration off and use the app to save a lot of time.

I have seen a return on investment as it helps to prevent cyber attacks and optimize network and user management. The security has been improved and made more reliable over the past few months.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Before choosing Barracuda CloudGen Firewall, I evaluated Juniper AP series access points.

What other advice do I have?

My advice to others looking into using Barracuda CloudGen Firewall is that it is one of the best next-generation tools that has been very helpful in my organization by providing deep inspection, deep packet inspection, and built-in IPS to look out for any attacks. It also has robust hardware that supports more than 50 to 80,000 simultaneous connections, being very stable. It offers web protection with URL filtering functionality and application control, making it one of the best tools.

My additional thoughts about Barracuda CloudGen Firewall is that the experience has been positive for using this tool with solid protection with easy management and control of the network. The firewall also allows home office use through VPN remote access for our employees to use for work. It has been a very great tool.

I would rate my overall experience with Barracuda CloudGen Firewall as a nine out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

Strong security with effective traffic management and good support

  • February 21, 2025
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

We use Barracuda CloudGen Firewall for protection in our network and IPsec. We also set up BGP for our customers.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable features of Barracuda CloudGen Firewall include antivirus protection, anti-DDoS, and IPS. We also find the bandwidth management and traffic shaping features effective for traffic optimization. The policy that allows for license renewal and hardware refresh every four years also offers cost efficiency for us.

What needs improvement?

The interface of Barracuda CloudGen Firewall is not as user-friendly as others. It is a bit complicated and could be improved. The initial setup can also be complex because it involves navigating different menus instead of a linear setup process. Integration with AI would be helpful as modern attacks often utilize AI.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Barracuda CloudGen Firewall for eight years. We are a partner of Barracuda.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

When we use Barracuda, we have not experienced any attacks or security breaches.

How are customer service and support?

I am quite satisfied with Barracuda's technical support. However, the menu is not as user-friendly, though the overall security has been satisfactory, with no breaches.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have worked with several firewalls before using Barracuda CloudGen Firewall.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup can be a bit complex because it involves different menus and sections. It is not straightforward like others, which use everything in one flow.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The license price of Barracuda CloudGen Firewall is lower than others, and maintenance or support is included.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Customers seeking other options often consider solutions like FortiGate due to its reputation in Gartner Quadrant.

What other advice do I have?

Customers seeking products based on Gartner Quadrant leadership might not prefer Barracuda, as it is not positioned as a leader.

I would rate Barracuda CloudGen Firewall at eight out of ten.

I recommend this firewall for small to medium businesses, however, larger enterprises might look for something with a higher brand reputation.

Ensures data security with advanced intrusion prevention and 24/7 monitoring

  • January 24, 2025
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

Primarily, we cater to data center customers who locate their servers, applications, and data within one of our data centers. These customers use the firewall to secure their perimeter.

What is most valuable?

I find the intrusion prevention system to be valuable, along with the fact that it can now integrate with Barracuda's XDR. This integration helps secure our data and applications from attackers trying to gain access and detect malicious activity.

Additionally, the easy addition of XDR allows us to have 24/7 SOC monitoring. All of the information is located in the central management system, enabling customers to see performance and get reports. We can also access the system for policy updates, firmware updates, etc.

What needs improvement?

There could be improvements in licensing. Some licensing aspects are challenging; for example, if you're using an active-passive setup, you have to license both firewalls. Some competitors now offer a floating license between the two. They offer more streamlined license allocation.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used the solution for one year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I rate the stability as ten. We have very few issues with Barracuda Firewall, even in the case of zero-day vulnerabilities, which are fewer compared to competitors.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The firewalls are very good and scalable. However, if you are moving into higher-end services, there may be some other products that are more viable.

When positioning into customers, some larger enterprise customers tend to move towards one of the top three: either Cisco, Fortinet, or Palo Alto. For SME and SMB partners, the scalability of the solution is really good, however, enterprise customers may start seeing additional features in other larger players that they might be looking for.

How are customer service and support?

I rate the customer service as ten out of ten. Barracuda's partner support is better than the majority, and it stands out as one of their strengths. It covers solution design and is available to assist with the configuration of devices, onboarding, and support, offering enhancement and optimization for ongoing services.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I'm aware of Meraki. With Meraki, if you have two firewalls, you only need one license. However, with Barracuda, you need to license both firewalls, which makes them more expensive.

How was the initial setup?

I rate the initial setup as ten out of ten.

It is straightforward to set up a CloudGen file, taking a couple of hours. Once we have the configuration agreed with the customer, the setup and onboarding are completed within a few hours.

We receive the box from Barracuda or from our stores, pre-stage it into our network for initial configuration and Soak testing to ensure functionality. The customer can install it at their location, or we do it on their behalf.

We run the firewall in simulation mode to observe traffic and ensure service transition is effective. After confirming functionality with the customer, we transition to a live service.

What other advice do I have?

I would strongly encourage considering the full stack solution offered by Barracuda, including their XDR overlay service and wider secure edge service. These integrate closely with the Barracuda CloudGen Firewall and offer a holistic security layer.

I rate the overall solution nine out of ten.

A tool that allows its users to manage big environments with fewer resources

  • November 27, 2023
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is most valuable?

One of the big benefits of the product is that it allows you to manage big environments with fewer resources. The product offers very good management.

What needs improvement?

Barracuda CloudGen Firewall should work a little bit more with the logs so that, in our company, we can generate a little bit more reports and get a bit more statistics, which would be fine for us. The firewall's functionalities are okay, including network and security. The tool should improve its reporting and security areas, which are the only areas of concern related to the product.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Barracuda CloudGen Firewall for twenty-two years. I use the solution's different model versions, including Barracuda CloudGen Firewall F12.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is a stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is a scalable solution.

How was the initial setup?

The product is easy to deploy, configure, and update.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I would prefer users to opt for Palo Alto in enterprise-sized environments, like energy companies, health companies, or financial organizations. Compared to Barracuda CloudGen Firewalls, Palo Alto offers its users a little bit more security. Palo Alto's threat prevention, sandboxing functionalities, and web filtering features are good. I don't know the other vendors so well that I could talk about them.

What other advice do I have?

Though there are some issues with Barracuda CloudGen Firewall, those working with it in our company are mostly satisfied with it.

I rate the overall tool an eight out of ten.

    reviewer2302062

A stable product that provides excellent encryption, security, and technical support

  • November 08, 2023
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

The solution has a couple of use cases in VPN. We have branches connecting to the head office. We have users connecting to VPNs. We also use SSL VPN.

What is most valuable?

The encryption and the security standards are valuable.

What needs improvement?

We need high availability and load balancing. The product does not enable load balancing. We are looking for alternate solutions. We have multiple VPN channels with clients and sites. We need to ensure that the traffic is optimized so that the full bandwidth of the existing network is utilized. If the link goes down, the traffic must be routed without any downtime in the connection.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for the past six years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I rate the tool’s stability a nine out of ten. We haven't faced any issues with the stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I rate the tool’s scalability an eight out of ten. The features are a bit limited compared to other vendors. Scaling with limited options doesn’t make sense. Around 80 people are using the solution.

How are customer service and support?

We have contacted support for configuration or troubleshooting. We involve support in areas where the product lacks features. The support is quite good. I rate the support a nine and a half out of ten.

What was our ROI?

I have seen a return on investment from the solution. We will be using the device refresh feature next year. The devices will be upgraded free of charge.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The product is a bit cheaper than some solutions. It depends on the type of load.

What other advice do I have?

We are partners of the product. The solution must include as many features as possible. Each environment has different use cases. The features provided by the tool must be flexible enough to address our use cases and requirements. Overall, I rate the tool an eight out of ten.

We have 300 Barracuda CloudGen Firewall users. I rate its scalability a nine out of ten.

How are customer service and support?

The platform’s technical support services are good. We refer to a published guide in case of errors.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I am familiar with FortiGate and Check Point. We prefer Barracuda CloudGen Firewall for a stable environment, new infrastructure, and reasonable implementation offers.

How was the initial setup?

We have been using the platform for a few years now. So, the initial setup process is simple for us.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The platform is inexpensive compared to other vendors. I rate its pricing a five out of ten. We have purchased its support services for three years.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We are going to evaluate Barracuda and Cloud Genesys to get a better understanding of VPN issues.

What other advice do I have?

Barracuda CloudGen Firewall offers a separate license for VPN clients with some easy-to-use features. If you buy the module, you can use the entire features. The only issue is that it is not as popular as FortiGate.

I recommend it to others and rate it an eight out of ten.

Excellent client-to-site VPN stability and great antivirus protection

  • April 19, 2023
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

The firewall is robust and performs well for us. The solution is fairly easy to maintain and monitor, check logs and updates, and do daily, weekly, and month-to-month maintenance. We've actually been very happy with the firewalls and also the support.

How has it helped my organization?

We have a whole lot more control over the level of protection. Most of my clients are simple manufacturers, and we use the solution to protect them from web bots. They do have an integrated firewall or integrated malware protection and antivirus protection on the firewall. They've solved a lot of service attacks and attacks from simple infection bots that we were experiencing beforehand. The solution has had no downtime since we installed it. As opposed to some other firewalls that tend to lock up occasionally, this solution has never locked up or had any issues.

The only issues we've ever encountered have been during an update or a change, which were always solved immediately by me or through a simple call to support. The solution's monitoring and logs are very comprehensive, and I've been able to backtrace hacks. Their history logs are very easy to pull on their unit, and they keep tons of data that is way more than I would ever need as far as that point. I have one client to whom we have provided a higher level of protection. Certain machines based on IP or MAC addresses cannot access the Internet. So that took a little bit of advanced configuration to get that going. The solution has phenomenally helped that business to block internet access for certain IP addresses or MAC addresses and yet allow the antivirus and Windows updates to occur. So the solution is good enough for a simple firewall, but they're also advanced enough to do some interesting things depending on your needs.

What is most valuable?

The stability of the client-to-site VPN or the client VPN software has been excellent. The antivirus protection or malware protection has been great. I love the level of logging with it because it makes running my quarterly reports and things for our ISO certifications a lot easier for us.

What needs improvement?

The biggest downside is that it is quite an expensive product. So a little bit better pricing or some options for a little bit cheaper device would be nice. They are quite complex to get up and running for anything beyond a basic installation. They could do something better with their initial setup wizard to make things just a little bit easier. Besides that, they're pretty good as far as I'm concerned.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the Barracuda CloudGen Firewall for a little over four to five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I rate Barracuda CloudGen Firewall a ten out of ten for stability because their stability has been excellent.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is very scalable because you can use it for a simple setup or some quite advanced features. I rate Barracuda CloudGen Firewall a nine out of ten for scalability.

How are customer service and support?

Their customer support has exceeded my expectations for every interaction we've ever had. I initially called them to ask how to set up the solution, and the guy walked me right through it. He was extremely knowledgeable, and he knew his stuff. Their customer support is available anytime, and it's quite easy to get a hold of them. Their process is a little strange. You have to get a call in and give them your info, and they log a ticket. After that, they get a tech to either work with you or they will call you back if their wait times are longer. Other than that, their support has been superb.

I rate their customer support a ten out of ten because they've been fantastic.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We used NETGEAR ProSAFE models. I also have quite a good experience with the D-Link AC line. Those were the two solutions that we were primarily using before the Barracuda CloudGen Firewall.

We decided to go with the Barracuda CloudGen Firewall because we wanted something more comprehensive and more powerful with better protection. The NETGEAR model is a thing of the past, and they're no longer selling those. The D-Links are still available, but they're nowhere near the protection and features that Barracuda CloudGen Firewall provides. So we were looking for a better product for small to medium-sized businesses, especially with all the hacking and everything coming out of other countries.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is complex. I rate their initial setup a six or seven out of ten.

Setting up the solution with the company usually takes an hour and a half. Our most advanced case took about three hours.

What about the implementation team?

I've always implemented the solution in-house or in-house with help from support. Typically, just one person is involved in the deployment of the solution.

What was our ROI?

There is minimal upkeep and maintenance on the device. You can configure it, set it up, and pretty much never touch it again if you wish. You may need to do the periodic updates they release that improve its features and protection. Once it's set up and configured, you can almost walk away from it until the device quits working. So far, we've only had one actual failure, and it was due to power issues. So, they've been rock solid, and you could configure it and walk away and not have any real maintenance if you wish. Or you can maintain it and keep it functioning at the top level.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I rate Barracuda CloudGen Firewall an eight out of ten for its pricing. It's not the most expensive, but it's certainly not cheap. It costs around $2000 a year for licensing, instant replacement, antivirus, virus or malware protection, and the general support contract we use. I am not aware of any additional costs to the standard licensing fee we pay for this solution.

What other advice do I have?

We have not had any major technical problems. If we do ever have technical issues, their support has been extremely helpful. It is quite a complicated piece of hardware to configure, and I would love to find better training for that. However, someone with a technical background can set them up. We usually do the hardware replacement through their system every four years. They will send you a new device so long as you have kept the hardware replacement and the support up during the four years. So that's been an incredible plus to the unit itself.

I recommend having a talented or knowledgeable IT staff install it or be prepared to call support and spend time with them to get it installed. It's not simple by any means. Beyond that, be prepared to have a little bit of downtime while you're doing the installation. It's not a quick install. It's not something you can put in and have the network up in a few minutes, and it will take you a little while. And also, you need somebody that's either quite knowledgeable about it or is willing to work with their support team to set up the solution.

Typically, the deployment model used is on-premises or an on-premise and hybrid setup.

Overall, I rate Barracuda CloudGen Firewall an eight out of ten because my overall experience with the solution has been good.
